Batman - The Rise of the Blue Beetle!

In honor of Batman‘s 75th Anniversary we turn out attention back to the Dark Knight’s more memorable moments on the big and small screen with the first episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Although it would take the show a few episodes to permanently embrace the Silver Age style which would become its trademark, “Rise of the Blue Beetle!” does feature an odd space story and a super-hero origin setting up the show’s premise of Batman teaming up with a different hero every week (as was the concept of the comic from which the show took its name).

Batman: The Brave and the Bold – Season Two

Batman: The Brave and the Bold - Season TwoAlthough the First Season collection of Batman: The Brave and the Bold certainly has its moments, the Season Two collection is where the show begins to hit its stride and fully embrace the Silver Age zaniness which would become its trademark.

Collected on Blu-ray for the first time, the Second Season set includes not one but two Captain Marvel stories, the classic recreation of the comic story of Batman confronting Joe Chill, a Crisis-inspired tale involving all three Flashes, Aquaman’s family vacation, Booster Gold and the Blue Beetle together again, the sidekicks getting their own episode, a Birds of Prey episode written by Gail Simone, a space race between heroes and villains, and Batman being split into three separate personalities (including one who eats nachos). Unless you already own the episodes on DVD, it’s an easy recommendation for Bat-fans everywhere. Sadly, the set includes no extras.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold – Season One

Batman: The Brave and the Bold - Season OneOdds are if you’re a Batman: The Brave and the Bold fan you’ve long ago picked up the episodes on DVD. Tired of waiting years for a complete set (or even separate full season sets) I eventually picked up the heavily discounted the previously half-season releases. However for those who have been holding out, or those unfamiliar with the show until now, the Complete First Season has finally arrived on both Blu-ray and DVD.

The set-up was relatively simple. Borrowing both its premise and its title from DC’s long-running team-up book which ran from 1955-1983, the show teamed Batman (Diedrich Bader) up with a revolving cast of guest-stars heroes (from both the Silver Age and pre-New 52 Mondern Age) to take on various threats and super-villains over the show’s three-year run. Collecting the first 26 episodes of the series on 4 discs (or 2 Blu-rays), which is arguably the weakest of the bunch as you can tell the show was struggling to find the right mix of Bat-tastic adventure and Silver Age campiness which became its trademark style.

The All New Batman: The Brave and the Bold – Small Miracles

The All New Batman: The Brave and the Bold - Small MiraclesSmall Miracles collects six comics from the two series inspired by the Batman: The Brave and the Bold animated series. The highlight of the collection is the inclusion of The All-New Batman: The Brave and the Bold #13 which features all six Robins (Dick GraysonJason ToddTim Drake, Stephanie BrownDamian, and Carrie Kelly) brought together through time by the Phantom Stranger to save Batman‘s life by taking on Ra’s al Ghul and The League of Assassins.

Also included in this collection is the entertaining adventure involving Batgirl fighting off the infatuation of Bat-Mite while helping Batman fight crime, Batman and Mister Miracle working to escape Darkseid‘s trap, and the Dark Knight Detective in a race with the Flash to solve a crime in Keystone City. The collection also includes the well-meaning but hamfisted true meaning of Chanukah, and several cameos from DC heroes.

It’s not a must-have but the inclusion of the Robin story, and a pair of fun team-ups with Flash and Batgirl made it worth adding this to my collection.
