Batman: The Brave and the Bold – Requiem for a Scarlet Speedster

Growing up Barry Allen was one of my favorite DC characters. The latest episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold finds a way to weave in the character’s death and ghostly appearances (without a Crisis), along with of the Golden Age Flash Jay Garrick and Wally West, and a good villain in the Reverse-Flash. The interplay between the Flashes is what really makes this one work (and the look of all three is perfect!).

Batman: The Brave and the Bold video game trailer

One of my favorite games for the SNES was The Adventures of Batman & Robin. Now that may be too high a standard to hold the new game based on the current Batman: The Brave and the Bold cartoon up to, but this one appears (:54) to have one thing the other was missing – CATMAN!!!! If you’ve read your share of Batman comics you know the name Joe Chill, the man who forever changed the life of young Bruce Wayne one dark night in Crime Alley. With two bullets a simple thug changed the life of one small boy, and created Batman.

For the more lighthearted Batman: The Brave and the Bold the story of Batman confronting Chill might seem and odd pairing, but it works. In “Chill of the Night” the Spectre and the Phantom Stranger place a wager (who knew they both had a gambling problem?) on how the Dark Knight will respond to coming face-to-face with the murderer of his parents. The result gives us a fresh take on the classic “The Origin of Batman” Silver Age tale.

So you’re telling me not only do I get Batman in this cartoon but Captain Marvel, Black Adam, Dr. Sivana, the underground cavern with the statues of the Seven Deadly Sins, Fawcett City, and the Rock of Eternity, all in one episode? What’s not to love! The only thing missing here are cameos from Mr. Tawky Tawny and the rest of the Marvel Family (especially Hoppy).
