Batman #12

batman-new-52-12-coverBefore the DC reboot writer Scott Snyder was focused on telling an extremely good multi-issue arc in Detective Comics about Commisioner Gordon and his son James Jr. that only peripherally involved the Batman. With Night of the Owls officially done Snyder returns to this style of story giving us a Batman comic with very little of the Caped Crusader.

The protagonist for Batman #12 is a young woman named Harper Row and her brother Cullen who is constantly picked on and beaten up by local thugs for being gay. Harper works as a city electric engineer, through her job and winning a chance to attend a lavish Wayne Foundation event, finds her paths crossing with Bruce Wayne and Batman.

It may not be as good as Snyder’s pre-New 52 work, and it certainly drags in places with the sheer amount of Harper’s narration, but it’s refreshing to read something new after the prolonged Court of Owls arc. Whether meaning to or not Harper certainly reminds me of Carrie Kelly and from the final panels, despite Batman’s orders for her to stop trying to help him, I have a feeling we may see her again. Worth a look.

[DC, $3.99]

The first trailer for the two-part animated movie adapatation of Frank Miller‘s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns has hit the net and the results are… mixed. From what we see here the look of Miller’s version of a an older Batman look fairly well represented but my biggest concerns are examples of voice acting we get in the trailer. Peter Weller‘s Batman is far from the older, graveled voice I was expecting. Ariel Winter sounds okay as Carrie Kelly, although (whether it be her choice or the direction) the inflection and delivery of some iconic lines seems to be off (as in her first introduction to Batman). DC’s certainly throwing a ton of money at this (for a straight-to-DVD animated film, anyway) and given my love for the original property I’m certainly going to give it a look, but I do have some concerns. The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 hits stores on October 23rd.

dark-knight-rises-posterJoel Schumacher killed Batman, at least in the movies, and at least for the better part of a decade. In 2003 the Caped Crusader was still in limbo six years after the theatrical debacle known as Batman and Robin. (One word: Bat-nipples.) Enter Christopher Nolan.

Batman Begins would hit theaters two years later followed up by the critically acclaimed The Dark Knight in 2008 featuring the Oscar-winning performance of Heath Ledger as the Joker. Four years later Nolan releases the third, and final, movie of his Bat-trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, which brings the story of Nolan’s version of Batman full circle.
