Batman #18 comic reviewAfter kidnapping Catwoman, Commissioner Gordon, and Duke Thomas, Bane offers Batman a simple exchange: his friends for the Psycho-Pirate. Despite his history with the Dark Knight Detective, the villain is unprepared for Batman’s response.

The latest issue of the “I Am Bane” storyline features an extended fight sequence between Batman and Bane. Although the villain gets the upper-hand, he’s unprepared for Batman’t contingency plan. Keeping Bane occupied with repeated headbutts to the super-villains’ fists gives Catwoman enough time to free herself and the other hostages and take away all of Bane’s leverage. Batman wins basically by letting Bane kick his ass.

“League of Shadows” begins here with Shiva and the League hitting Gotham City. Killing the mayor and framing Batman for the crime (hrm, not really happy to see another Batman fugitive storyline), the League of Shadows also expose the local newscasters to Joker venom on-air. And they are just getting started. Wreaking general havoc, the League begins its attack on the city and its protectors. As to just what the League wants, and how Batman for Batman and his team will have to go to stop them, we’ll just have to wait and see. Worth a look.

Justice League of America #1 comic reviewLogically, Justice League of America #1 makes about as much sense as the plot to the Oscar-winning Suicide Squad. This isn’t the first time Batman has assembled his own team (although events concerning his role in the Outsiders are still a bit fuzzy after the Rebirth reboot). Believing the Earth needs a new super-team to fight the DCU’s larger threats, Batman cobbles together one hell of a bizarre looking group. Longtime Justice League mainstays such as Black Canary and Vixen are givens. And the Ray and Ryan Choi certainly make sense. But the former super-villain Killer Frost? And the uncontrollable galactic bounty hunter Lobo? Just what is Batman thinking?

Batman #17 comic reviewFor one of the smartest people on the planet Batman is sometimes pretty damn dumb. The second chapter of “I Am Bane” begins with the Dark Knight Detective enlisting the help of Superman to keep his Bat-Family out of harms way while he attempts to deal with Bane alone. I guess taking the super-villain down as a team would have been too easy? With the Bat-kids off the books, Bane targets others close to Batman including Catwoman, Commissioner Gordon, and Duke Thomas. Maybe if Batman had help finding Bane they would be safe.

The issue also offers an odd scene of Gordon watching Batman let Catwoman go (to almost immeadiately be turned into a hostage). So… Batman cares enough to lock his foster kids up in the Fortress of Solitude but not enough to stop Catwoman from walking into the same danger? Kind of a dick move.

Detective Comics #950 comic reviewA prelude to the series next arc, Detective Comics #950 centers around Cassandra Cain. From her spying on the Gotham City Metropolitan Ballet’s prima ballerina Christine Montclair to taking down a gang of human traffickers, the entire issue is presented (and narrated) from the character’s point of view. We see her fear of her own training and nature, and her inability to tell those closest to her in on the thoughts and feelings bottled up inside. In many ways it’s a sad (even melancholy) standalone issue, but at the same time writer James Tynion IV and artist Marcio Takara create an unexpectedly quiet and beautiful character-driven issue that should be a must-read for any fans Cassandra.
