Batman - It's Never Too Late

“It’s Never Too Late” isn’t what you would expect from a Batman cartoon. With this early episode Batman: The Animated Series let fans know that the new series would break the mold when it came to cartoon heroes. The mob war between upstart Rupert Thorne (John Vernon) and old-timer Arnold Stromwell (Eugene Roche) heats up with the abduction of Stromwell’s son. Thorne leads Stromwell into a set-up where the old mobster is apparently killed, but Batman (Kevin Conroy) shows up to save Stromwell’s life and attempts over the rest of the episode to save the mobster’s soul.

All-Star Batman #1Scott Snyder is certainly a glass half-empty kind of guy. All-Star Batman #1 puts Batman and Two-Face on the road. Desperate for a chance to cure Harvey Dent, Batman races to an undisclosed location while the criminal kingpin has put an offer out to everyone. If Two-Face isn’t rescued every piece of dirty and blackmail available to him will be released to the public. However, if someone should find and release Two-Face untold riches will be theirs.

All-Star Batman #1 offers a pretty bleak view of humanity where everyone from a cop to a waitress is willing to kill for the prize. Batman also has to deal with super-villains like Killer Moth, Firefly, and Black Spider. Snyder’s choice to make even Alfred culpable in such scheming leaves a pretty awful taste in my mouth.

Detective Comics #937Detective Comics #937 answers some very important questions about how the army of Batmen were created and why. While Batwoman reluctantly leads her team against her own father, with a pit stop through the deep underground of Gotham which Red Robin has made good use of, Batman breaks out of his cell and does a little investigating as to just what the hell is going on.

The most important piece of information Detective Comics #937 offers is just how the Batmen were able to take down Batman (technically they didn’t, their tech did). This addresses my one big complaint with the arc so far as well as points out a glaring weakness for the soldiers who are relying not only on tech stolen from Batman but a sophisticated computer program based on his own fighting style (which, of course could be vulnerable to the right kind of attack).

Red Hood and the Outlaws: Rebirth #1Red Hood and the Outlaws: Rebirth #1 doesn’t introduce us to the new Outlaws, but the issue does catch-up readers on the history of Jason Todd from street urchin to Robin the Boy Wonder to the Red Hood. It also introduces a plot to keep Jason a part of the extended Bat-Family but still separate from its core members. It’s a little odd that both Red Hood and Nightwing are going undercover with underground criminal organizations, but the set-up (at least for me) works far better here than with Dick Grayson.

We’ll have to wait for Red Hood and the Outlaws #1 for the introductions of both Bizarro and Artemis, and the how and why they team-up with the vigilante. While certainly doing its job to reintroduce Jason to the DCU the comic doesn’t do much to explain the set-up of the new series with two of its key figures (and their relationship to Jason) unexplored.
