Top 10 Movies of 2025

2025 turned out to be a good year at the movies with some heavy-hitters topping my list. While my top ten may lack a couple of notable films such as Marty Supreme (which, while I quite enjoyed, never hit with me on an emotional level), it’s an eclectic group across multiple genres including drama, a spy thriller, science fiction, horror, and even a comedy sneaking onto the list. Writer/director Ido Fluk tackles the life of teenage concert organizer Vera Brandes (Mala Emde) and the Köln Concert, recorded in the West German Opera House which would become both the best-selling Jazz solo album and the best-selling piano album ever recorded. Breaking out of her stifling family dynamic, Brandes started booking clubs and concerts for Jazz musicians at the age of 15 and three years later, despite a number of obstacles, delivered Keith Jarrett (John Magaro) on stage to perform what is regarded as a seminal moment in music history.

Borderline

There’s nothing quite as disappointing as your typical film that never goes for it, never rises to the occasion, and chooses to play it safe within the expected framework of its genre. There are studios who are created for the sole purpose of outputting these kinds of films. Borderline does not have this problem. Writer/director Jimmy Warden‘s batshit crazy dark comedy about a celebrity (Samara Weaving) held hostage by an obsessed fan is the kind of balls-to-the-wall lunacy that garnered and kept my attention for its entire 94-minute running-time. This film rules.

Filmed in secret without approval from the Iranian government, It Was Just an Accident offers a harsh look at the scars left by an authoritative regime while questioning what justice may be found in revenge.

Sentimental Value

The death of Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes’ (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) mother brings their estranged father (Stellan Skarsgård) back into their lives. A celebrated auteur filmmaker who chose his career over his family years before, Gustav brings with him a script for his first project in 15 years which is inspired by his family’s history. After his hopes to get his eldest daughter to star in the film fall through, Nora being a local stage and television actress, Gustav casts a young Hollywood actress (Elle Fanning) seeking her first serious role.
