Based on a real practice in Japan where a company offers professional stand-ins to clients, Rental Family stars Brendan Fraser as a struggling actor living in Japan who is initially hired to be a token white guy for a client setting up their own funeral. Confused, but in need of work, Phillip (Fraser) agrees further roles (most of which are covered in montages while two key roles make up the core of the main story).

Returning to theaters 25 years after its release, The Mummy is an odd bit of entertainment. When it was released you could refer to it as a poor man’s Indiana Jones (of course, that was before the two lackluster attempts to revive that franchise in both Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny). Part B-movie serial, part Evil Dead 2-style horror flick (never read the ancient evil book aloud!), and part wacky over-the-top comedy, it’s hard to argue that The Mummy is a good film, in fact in many ways it’s certainly not, but that doesn’t mean it can’t provide a good time proving that charm can get you an awful long way.

Not many films from 2022 brought me to tears, but director Darren Aronofsky‘s managed it with the payoff to his emotional tale of an isolated Internet professor (Brendan Fraser) suffering from guilt, loss, and an obesity that has grown to life-threatening levels. With its small cast and singular locale of nearly every scene taking place within Charlie’s apartment, designed and organized to fit his needs, we feel his isolation in every moment of Aronofsky’s chamber drama.
