Upgraded is one of those films that makes you pity those involved in the production who will have to wear the stain of being a part of the film on the career resume like a scarlet letter until the end of time. The braindead romcom (apparently unaware its stealing random characters directly from Cinderella) offers almost no examples of a normally-functioning human being on-screen. If this is what it feels like to be upgraded, leave me in coach.

Camila Mendes stars as a mean girl on scholarship at a private high school fueled by anger over her boyfriend (Austin Abrams) leaking a sex tape to the entire school, for which she, not he, takes all the heat. A chance meeting over the summer with a transferring student (Maya Hawke) whose old bully (Ava Capri) also attends the school leads to the unlikely pair teaming up to take out each other’s enemies.

Adapted from one of the longest running comic series, Riverdale brought the characters of Archie Comics to television albeit with a less wholesome vibe than their source material. In some ways it’s so unrecognizable, it took me some time to sit down and give the show a chance. However, despite the modern updates the show turns out to have more going on that you might expect.
The First Season introduces us to the core characters Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), and Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) providing various friendship and relationship drama and a mystery to solve involving the disappearance of one of their classmates. In terms of crime solving it delivers, and thankfully with a lack of supernatural causes (unlike The CW’s Nancy Drew.).

Career Day comes to Fairfax and, not unexpectedly, things quickly get out of control. While both Derica (Kiersey Clemons) and Benny (Peter S. Kim) get interns with Girlbossier, and Derica is quickly fast-tracked as the new urban look for the company, Dale (Skyler Gisondo) gets assigned to Off-Brian and Truman (Jaboukie Young-White) has an unexpected reunion with Cerise (Camila Mendes) in the AI world of Welch’s. Each one has their own separate adventure, although Derica’s is the most notable for blackmailing the CEO (Annie Murphy) of the company for real change rather than just the appearance the corporation was all too pleased with.

As the students of fight over who can turn their grief into the largest spectacle and earn the most social media likes following the news that Principal Weston (Colton Dunn) has died, Dale (Skyler Gisondo) discovers Weston faked his own death and is living in the bowels of the school. Weston blackmailing Dale to keep his secret, however, nearly gets the principal killed for real.
