The first live-action Masters of the Universe film since 1987, the new film makes notable upgrades in allowing most of the plot to unfold on Eternia (although we do get stuck on Earth for a large section of Act I), throw in more of oddball characters of the franchise (although not as many as you may be expecting), and (perhaps a little too much) discuss who has the power of Grayskull. It’s a more accurate film in honoring the toys and animated series that captured kids’ attention in the 1980s, but is it a better film?

Upgraded

Upgraded

Upgraded is one of those films that makes you pity those involved in the production who will have to wear the stain of being a part of the film on the career resume like a scarlet letter until the end of time. The braindead romcom (apparently unaware its stealing random characters directly from Cinderella) offers almost no examples of a normally-functioning human being on-screen. If this is what it feels like to be upgraded, leave me in coach.

Camila Mendes stars as a mean girl on scholarship at a private high school fueled by anger over her boyfriend (Austin Abrams) leaking a sex tape to the entire school, for which she, not he, takes all the heat. A chance meeting over the summer with a transferring student (Maya Hawke) whose old bully (Ava Capri) also attends the school leads to the unlikely pair teaming up to take out each other’s enemies.
