Mystery novelist Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) returns for another season to shadow, and bother, NYPD Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) in the second season of Castle. (Read the first season review here.)

Highlights from the season include the publication of Castle’s first Nikki Heatnovel “Heat Wave,” vampires, the “best case ever” concerning a dead con man who may, or may not, be dead (and may, or may not, be a secret CIA agent), models, a dominatrix (Dina Meyer), a missing bullet, a two-parter involving a serial killer obsessed with Nikki Heat, a murdered bigamist, a Mayan curse, a new boyfriend for Beckett (Michael Trucco), and Alyssa Milano guest-stars as Castle’s long-lost love, and the one who got away, in A Rose for Everafter.

Castle – A Deadly Affair

Crime novelist Rick Castle and Detective Kate Beckett are back from their summer break, and I couldn’t be happier. Nathan Fillion is perfectly cast as the smug mystery novelist, and Stana Katic is just the right mix of smart and sexy. My only complaint with last season was the late swerve that kept them from getting together in the finale. Maybe this year? (I won’t hold my breath.) Anywho, the third season’s opener finds Castle in the doghouse with the NYPD and even arrested for murder.

Castle – A Deadly Game

The second season finale provides another slightly off-beat mystery of the week while toying with us over the possibility of Beckett (Stana Katic) and Castle’s (Nathan Fillion) relationship moving to another level. I’m slightly disappointed, though not surprised, in the episode’s epilogue, but it does give you that shot in the gut to bring back viewers for another year.

It seems Richard Castle has a best seller on his hands. Who cares if he’s fictional? Heat Wave, which debuted at #26 on the New York Times Bestseller List, was authored by the fictitious author played by Nathan Fillion on Castle (no word yet on who really wrote the book), and follows Detective Nikki Heat (inspired by the character played by Stana Katic on the show).

When a pair of murders are discovered to be recreations of his novels, writer Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) is brought in for questioning by Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). Castle, coming off the end of a best-selling series of novels, is looking for something different. And, much to Beckett’s consternation, he finds it by helping her solve the case.

Rather than part ways Castle becomes a permanent consulatant for the NYPD as he does research for his new character “Nikki Heat” based on Beckett. As he writes, and takes care of his precosuious mother (Susan Sullivan) and responsible daughter (Molly C. Quinn), Castle helps Beckett and her team (Jon Huertas, Seamus Dever, Tamala Jones) solve a string of cases including a man stuffed into a wall safe, a nanny thrown into a dryer, the death of a young private school student in Central Park, a woman frozen for years, a woman drowned in a bathtub full of motor oil, and a dead Councilman.
