Batman #78 comic review“City of Bane” catches up with Batman and Catwoman on the road back to Gotham City. On an unnamed beach, somewhere still far from home, Catwoman continues to help Bruce Wayne get back to full strength (both physically and mentally). This means a bit of training, and quite a bit of dialogue between the pair who recognize, but are not willing to give into, the attraction that still exists between them.

Other comic writers should take note of Batman #78 which works wonderfully well as a character-driven mid-arc story (and not simply another “City of Bane” issue that marginally moves the larger arc forward). Slow-paced, but important for both Batman’s recovery and his relationship with Catwoman going forward, Batman #78 is my favorite issue of the arc so far.

Catwoman #2

Catwoman #2 comic reviewCatwoman‘s investigation into the impostor responsible for burglary and murder, tarnishing our protagonist’s already bruised name, leads her to a warehouse full of fakes and more questions. Quickly dispatching the women, who turn out mostly to be unemployed actresses, Selena is left with a single breadcrumb to trail back to the man who hired them (but still no clue, as yet, as to why).

What we do learn here is that the Governor Creel’s wife Raina wasn’t expecting one of her frauds to commit murder. What she did want, other than drawing Catwoman out of seclusion, however, still remains a mystery.

Batman - The Purr-Fect Crime / Better Luck Next Time TV review

Pirates, and tigers, and Catwoman… oh, my! Today’s Throwback Tuesday post takes us back to the 1966 Batman TV-series starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin. “The Purr-Fect Crime” marks the first appearance of Catwoman (Julie Newmar) on the show. The villain makes two separate robberies to get her claws on a pair of golden cat statues. However, Catwoman is after something far more valuable than the cats themselves. Together the statues reveal the location to a secret pirate treasure hidden in caves underneath Gotham City. Yes, I said secret pirate treasure. To get her her hands on the prize she’ll need to out-wit the Dynamic Duo including putting the pair through multiple death traps (one inspired by the famous Lady and the Tiger conundrum).

Catwoman #1

Catwoman #1 comic reviewAfter the wedding to a certain Dark Knight Detective which didn’t happen, Selena Kyle slinks off attempting to run away from her pain in the gambling dens and casinos. However, when Catwoman is framed for murder by an impostor, an exhausted Selina reclaims her role and hits the streets once more.

I do like the art Joëlle Jones, who does double duty here as both writer and artist, but I’m less sure of the choice of villain (who reminds me uncomfortably of Sharon Stone from Catwoman). While I’m in favor of most of the tweaks to Catwoman’s costume, I’m perplexed by the open armpit design (what ever happened to never letting them see you sweat?).
