Based on true events, Channing Tatum stars as former soldier turned thief Jeffrey Manchester who robbed over 40 McDonald’s before being sent to prison only to escape and hide out for months inside a Toys”R”Us. Fairly early on in the film someone describes Manchester as both a genius in seeing and understanding the world and a complete idiot in terms of lacking basic common sense, and the theme of Roofman is exploring that idea.

NASA might seem an unusual spot for a romcom, but Fly Me to the Moon soars on the wit of its script and the charm of its stars Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum. Is it a great film? No, but it’s a damn sight better than your average romantic comedy and certainly better than I was expecting. Johansson stars as Kelly Jones, a New York marketing expert brought it to make NASA sexy again and help sell both the public and Congress on Apollo 11‘s trip to the moon. Concerned with the safety of the astronauts and the aura of the program, Cole Davis (Tatum) immediately butts heads with Kelly’s approach (despite the obvious attraction between the pair).

There’s a scene in The Lost City where romance cover model Alan (Channing Tatum), his hired mercenary (Brad Pitt), and captured romance novelist Loretta (Sandra Bullock), who is tied to a chair inside a wheelbarrow, are all racing from the background explosions of the jungle encampment of a rich madman (Daniel Radcliffe) while pop music plays. That scene perfectly incapsulates the kind of dumb fun The Lost City provides.
The setup involves archeologist turned romance novelist whose novels are all based somewhat on historical locations and treasures. She’s kidnapped by a rich billionaire from a book signing (wearing a ridiculous costume she’ll be forced to keep for nearly the entire film) who believes she may hold the key to finding the real treasure she has written about in her schlocky romance series for years.

While I enjoyed writer-director Matthew Vaughn‘s absurdly over-the-top (but not that original) Bond spoof, I was far from the biggest fan of Kingsman: The Secret Service. Two years later Vaughn returns with most of the key figures from the first film offering more of the same while widening the world and opening the franchise to new sequel opportunities. The script follows the still unfortunately-named Eggsy (Taron Egerton) as one of the few surviving members of Kingsman which is destroyed by a crazy drug kingpin (Julianne Moore) who has a failed Kingsman recruit (Edward Holcroft) on her payroll.
While the film lacks the big action sequences of the first film or a strong female character to root for – Hanna Alström returns as Princess Tilde but is of little importance to the plot and Roxy (Sophie Cookson) is unfortunately given the extremely early exit I predicted – the sequel hits most of the same beats as the original with a crazy villain with an insane plan and absurd sidekick which Eggsy and friends will have to thwart to save a large percentage of the world’s population. To do that he’ll need the help of some new American friends.
