Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - The New Deal television review

It’s been over two years since I sat down to watch an episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. which I was astonished to discover was still on the air. Set in New York City during the early 1930s, features the remaining agents tracking Chronicoms who plan on stopping S.H.I.E.L.D. from ever coming into existence by altering the timeline. The episode has fun with the look of the era, particularly in styling Daisy‘s (Chloe Bennet) hair and clothing. The season premiere also fixes a mistake with the show since it’s inception by having the version of Coulson (Clark Gregg) be a Life Model Decoy for the now dead (again) agent. The choice to allow the LMD to know what it is allows for some internal conflict within the character and also full use of its enhanced strength against the threat of the Chronicoms.

Abominable movie reviewWhen it chooses to lead with its heart, DreamWorks can create a moving movie experience. More than a bit reminiscent of How to Train Your Dragon, the latest animated feature from the studio centers around a Chinese teenager named Yi (Chloe Bennet) who encounters an Abominable Snowman (Joseph Izzo) on the rooftop of her apartment building and decides to help her new friend find his way back home to the Himalayas. Along for the ride are brothers Peng (Albert Tsai) and Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) who find themselves reluctant traveling companions on a quest to stay three steps ahead of a wealthy billionaire (Eddie Izzard) and his private security army hoping to recapture the creature and return it to the lab it broke out at the beginning of the film.

“Everest,” as Yi names him, offers the same mix of cute and dangerous that Toothless provided in How to Train Your Dragon. Yi’s backstory, including her distance from her mother and grandmother and a recent family loss, help ground the emotional story while Everest provides the magic. As with Toothless, Everest is revealed to be more than he seems leading to an emotional whammy as Everest’s journey offers Yi an unexpected gift.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - All the Comforts of Home TV review

Despite having made it back to the present Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team appear to be still stuck in the inevitable timeloop of the Earth’s destruction and surrender to the Kree Empire. Aside from the authorities, there’s also a death squad after the remaining agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. inexplicably led by General Hale‘s (Catherine Dent) bitchy teenage daughter Ruby (Dove Cameron). The final scene’s reveal of the fact is surprising, but more from a WTF is going on perspective than any kind of clever reveal through good writing.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Together or Not at All TV review

“Together or Not at All” finally unites most of the time-displaced fugitive Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., if only for part of a single episode as the team will split-up yet again before the episode’s end. We get more of the family turmoil between the whiny Kasius (Dominic Rains) and uppity Faulnak (Samuel Roukin) that mercifully comes to an end with death of the later. In fact, there’s quite a bit of Kree-on-Kree violence as Sinara (Florence Faivre) murders Maston-Dar (Remington Hoffman) despite the fact that the other warrior could have been useful in the capture of Daisy (Chloe Bennet).

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Rewind television review

“Rewind” is the first episode of the show’s Fifth Season that I’m relatively happy with (even if it still leaves quite a bit unexplained). Leaving the alternate future, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. rewinds to the moment in which the rest of his team where taken and follows the path of Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) from arrest to finding his way to the future himself. The episode introduces us the alien Enoch (Joel Stoffer as a character pretty much stolen from a Hellboy comic) and a young human (Lexy Kolker) whose hazy vision of the future is responsible for the rest of the cast being thrown decades into the future, despite the fact that their return to the present will undoubtedly change events to make the future they are currently stuck in completely irrelevant.
