Rush Hour

The late 90s and early 2000s were the time for Hollywood to pair up Jackie Chan with a more comedic American co-star. Rush Hour gave us Chan as Chief Inspector Lee who is brought to the United States by Ambassador Han (Tzi Ma) after his daughter (Julia Hsu) is kidnapped. The FBI, not wanting Lee to get in the way, enlist mouthy LAPD Detective James Carter (Chris Tucker) to babysit Lee and keep him out of the investigation. That doesn’t go well with neither happy about their limited role in the investigation.

City Hunter

Adapted from the manga of the same name, 1993’s City Hunter is an odd flick. Over-the-top, wacky, and more live-action cartoon than anything else, the closest comparison is probably 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. In a film more notable for its comedy, fight sequences, and stunts than plot, Jackie Chan stars as private eye Ryo Saeba. The womanizing star hits on every woman he meets except for his former partner’s younger sister (Joey Wang), now his partner, who he swore never to pursue.

The Fall Guy

The biggest strength of The Fall Guy, loosely inspired by the 80s television show, is its stars. Ryan Gosling as stuntman Colt Seavers coming back from a failed stunt to work with his former girlfriend Jody (Emily Blunt) on her first big movie is the kind of wacky dumb fun you would expect. Once arriving in town, things don’t go smoothly for Colt who is sent to find the film’s missing star (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) by the producer (Hannah Waddingham) who dragged Colt out of retirement. This puts our stuntman in danger and also keeps him away from the woman he desperately wants to win back.

Fletch

Flashback Friday takes us back to the 1980s and an investigative reporter who stumbles upon corruption and murder. Fletch may be the quintessential Chevy Chase movie. One could certainly argue for National Lampoon’s Vacation or Caddyshack, although the latter is more of an ensemble piece. With Fletch, Chase carries the film from beginning to end through a variety of ad-libs, jokes, gags, and sarcastic remarks while breaking not one but two big stories in less than a week. When you think of Chase’s style of humor, it’s hard not to think of Fletch.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

Although rough in spots, the follow up to Ghostbusters: Afterlife is an improvement. Overstuffed with a bit too much fan service and a bland CGI big bad, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire pales in comparison with the original, but it does still provide its share of fun. The sequel brings back the Spengler descendants and more familiar faces of the original movie as well for another big stand against both the politics of Ghostbusting in the Big Apple and a fight against an evil god out to destroy New York.
