Renfield, which puts Dracula‘s (Nicolas Cage) long-suffering familiar R. M. Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) in the starring role, is a clever concept and about half a good movie. Playing on themes of codependency, unhealthy relationships, and being stuck with the worst boss ever, the film gives us Renfield in a support group, struggling with Dracula’s demands, and beginning to find the courage to stick up for himself after meeting a local cop (Awkwafina) in a police force so corrupt it makes the GCPD look respectable.

Throwback Thursday takes us back to another film involving a dragon with 2001’s Shrek. Parodying the fantasy genre by presenting characters in unfamiliar and unexpected ways, such as casting a grumpy ogre as the reluctant hero, the film was an immediate hit with both critics and audiences. Mike Myers, who replaced Chris Farley on the project after his death, stars as Shrek, a temperamental ogre none to pleased that the actions of the tiny, but quite evil, Lord Farquaad of Duloc (John Lithgow) are pushing fleeing fairy tale creatures into his swamp disturbing his peace and quiet.

The first episode of Mel Brooks’ History of the World: Part II, a sequel to his 1981 film no one was really asking for, is, to put it kindly, brutal. Following the same format of the 42 year-old film, the opening episode of the Hulu series offers us various sketches throughout history. Some are one-offs, and others will be returned to over and over again over the course of the series. Very few, however, are funny.

Well there’s a half-hour of my life I’ll never get back. Not Dead Yet is a workplace comedy that forgot the comedy. Gina Rodriguez stars as a thirtysomething still acting like a twentysomething who returns home to a career she abandoned years ago for a relationship that eventually went up in flames. Half of the episode shows us examples of how everyone else has grown up in Nell’s absence, leaving her on shaky ground both in her work and social life. The other half deals with dead people.
