Daredevil – The Southern Cross

The Second Season finale of Daredevil: Born Again is certainly cool, although not without some rather large problems. The creators of this series (and to an extent to original Netflix series) have gotten a little lost in the dichotomy of Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) to an almost psychotic extent. The conclusion of the Fisk’s mayor arc allows the series to split the pair for a cinematic moment, each facing a sort of justice for their actions. However, are we really to believe brutally murdering 50+ New Yorkers on his way out of office in a murderous rage has absolutely no consequences for our series’ villain while Daredevil (apparently without trial) is sent to prison?

As civil unrest boils over, a resistance takes to the street to protest Mayor Wilson Fisk‘s (Vincent D’Onofrio) policies, and Fisk mourns the death of his wife, Daredevil: Born Again finally gets around to bringing back Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) who survives an attack in her home from CIA black-ops and helps Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) make an explosive statement by hitting the smuggled weapons cache from the Northern Star. “Requiem” also brings the Kingpin and Daredevil face-to-face as Matt attempts to reason with the Mayor only for the two to come to blows ending an a stalemate with Fisk unable to kill Daredevil and Matt, haunted by memories of Foggy‘s (Elden Henson) forgiving nature, unwilling to kill the cancer at the center of the city.

Daredevil – Shoot the Moon

Marginally advancing the season’s plot, “Shoot the Moon” feels mostly like a filler episode where we get to spend time with various characters and get to see a couple of sequences highlighting our hero’s new costume while also showing us that Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) has learned a few things from her boyfriend. The Northern Star is still pivotal to the plans of both heroes and villains, but no real movement is made. Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) is confirmed to be the man who saved Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) but the reasons for his actions, and later attack on the anti-vigilante squad, aren’t explored.

Daredevil: Born Again returns with another season. Wilson Fisk‘s (Vincent D’Onofrio) stranglehold on New York City is complete. His propaganda machine is in overdrive, his enemies are scattered, and he’s profiting both legally and illegally while rebranding vigilantes as terrorists. Meanwhile, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) continue to fight the good fight from the shadows with their latest opportunity being the tanker crashed in New York Harbor full of weapons Fisk was smuggling in for his black ops CIA contact (Matthew Lillard).

Daredevil – Straight to Hell

  • Title: Daredevil: Born Again – Straight to Hell

“Straight to Hell” ends rather than concludes the first season revival of Daredevil. Using both Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) being at large and Matt Murdock‘s (Charlie Cox) heroically saving his life as an excuse, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) cracks down on the city giving him a chance to silent his detractors and impose his order on the city. Murdock escapes the hospital before the assassin (Arty Froushan) comes for him, and joins a (suddenly motivated) Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) on the streets. We also get the return of Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) which, like the Punisher’s involvement, feels more like a setup to Season Two than a big moment in and of itself (although the pair’s snooping does lead to a revelation concerning the motive for Foggy‘s death).
