Dungeons & Dragons: At the Spine of the World #2

Dungeons & Dragons: At the Spine of the World #2 comic reviewRuna, Saarvin, Patience, Amos, and Belvyre continue their trek across the icy Icewind Dale in a second issue that offers quite a bit of bickering among the group prior to them taking shelter in a cave and then getting a good look at the Zombie Frost Giants following them.

The giants are fun, as is the back and forth between our unlikely group that is balanced by the quick friendship forged between Runa and Saarvin. I also quite enjoyed some of the reaction shots we get in this issue from artist Martin Coccolo as events play out.

Dungeons & Dragons: At the Spine of the World #1

Dungeons & Dragons: At the Spine of the World #1 comic reviewDungeons & Dragons: At the Spine of the World #1 begins in blood as those transporting a haul from a mining excavation, a large stone of the mystical gem Chardalyn, go into murderous rage leaving only a single survivor for Runa to find. The first issue slowly builds the campaign, adding characters one by one. First we see the injured warlock Amos, the sole survivor, and to his assistance comes the barbarian Runa and ranger Saarvin helping to dispatch an angry Remorhaz. The nearby town, having their own troubles, adds the young druid Belvyre his protector Patience, along with the idea for a quest that might just save the town.

Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons #1

Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons #1 comic reviewReally the best thing about Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons #1, the first issue of a new four-part series introducing Morty to the idea of Dungeons & Dragons, is the odd assortment of variant covers for this issue that showcase various D&D elements including a characters sheet Morty cover, a cover based on the old D&D box set, Rick and friends playing D&D in the basement and several others. As for the comic itself, it’s okay (but never reaches the level of fun the concept suggests it should).

Dungeons & Dragons – The Complete Series

Dungeons & Dragons - The Complete SeriesWhile fighting off a cold, I spent some time looking back at some 80s Saturday morning cartoons. I watched Dungeons & Dragons when it originally aired, but hadn’t given it much thought since. I had picked up the complete set on DVD a few years back and it had just been sitting on my shelf. It seemed like the perfect time to jump back in, and what surprised me the most is how well the cartoon has held up after more than three decades.

The opening sequence to each episode sets up the basic premise of the show: Six adolescents taking a ride on a roller coaster are magically transported to the realm of Dungeons & Dragons where they will spend 27 episodes attempting to find their way home. Armed with magical items that each fit a certain D&D class, the characters are befriended by Dungeon Master (Sidney Miller) who shows up to provide information about their latest quest (often speaking in riddles). Dungeon Master’s advice isn’t always easy to follow, but inevitably the information he provides the group will lead them several small victories (although not the road home).
