Shadowhunters - Mea Maxima Culpa #tvreview

The end of the regular TV season and the slow roll-out of summer premieres has led me to give Shadowhunters another chance. Nothing has changed much since I last checked in on the show. Despite being captrued by the Institute Valentine (Alan Van Sprang) continues to scheme about collecting all the Mortal Instruments, the Institute remains remarkably dim when it comes to listening to its prize students, and Clary (Katherine McNamara) and Jace‘s (Dominic Sherwood) relationship hasn’t gotten any less complicated now that they apparently aren’t siblings (umm…what?). There are a few new storylines since I last peeked in, the first involves the new threat of the greater demon Azazel (Brett Donahue) wreaking havoc in the world and Isabelle‘s (Emeraude Toubia) addiction to vampire venom putting her in danger and meeting a new friend in a London Shadowhunter named Sebastian (Will Tudor).

Shadowhunters - The Guilty Blood TV review

Given the fallout from last year’s cliffhanger, Shadowhunters spends most of its season premiere resetting the world now that Jace (Dominic Sherwood) is in the clutches of Valentine (Alan Van Sprang) and the new head of the Institute (Nick Sagar) has branded the missing Shadowhunter a traitor – although his true allegiance is still very much in doubt. His mother attempting to kill him in the final scene, however, isn’t likely to entice him to return to the Clave any time soon. Although the truth about his birth from his father gives Jace just as many reasons to run screaming from his father.

Shadowhunters - Morning Star

The First Season of Shadowhunters comes to a close with a finale that wraps up several themes of the show’s first year while laying the foundation for next season. As Jace (Dominic Sherwood) struggles with the truth about his parentage, and not nearly enough about how just a few episodes he was macking on his sister, Clary (Katherine McNamara) and the other Shadowhunters discover Hodge (Jon Cor) has stolen the Mortal Cup with plans to deliver it to Valentine (Alan Van Sprang) and double their efforts not only to find Hodge but also go to whatever lengths necessary to free Clary’s mother from her slumber so they might have a chance against Valentine.

Shadowhunters - The World Inverted

“The World Inverted” is a odd episode. The logic goes something like this, to find Valentine (Alan Van Sprang) our intrepid heroes Clary (Katherine McNamara) and Jace (Dominic Sherwood) will travel to a idyllic parallel dimension to find a portal and return back home in the spot they wish (Valentine’s fortress). Of course it only partially works. First, the longer Clary stays in other dimension the more tempted she becomes to stay (and why wouldn’t she, it’s perfect?). And second, Alec‘s (Matthew Daddario) anger over the missing cup causes him to take drastic action which nearly gets Jace killed.

Shadowhunters - Rise Up

Several characters choose new paths in “Rise Up” including Simon (Alberto Rosende) who struggles with his new life as a vampire and several of the Shadowhunters who will have to make hard choices given the shifting balance of power within the Institute. Believing it to be the best option to restore his family’s honor, and continue to hide his sexuality, Alec (Matthew Daddario) announces his engagement to Lydia (Stephanie Bennett) to shocked friends and family. His sister, however, chooses a different path after Lydia has Meliorn (Jade Hassouné) jailed and tortured on orders from the Clave as Isabelle (Emeraude Toubia) decides to side with Clary (Katherine McNamara) and Jace (Dominic Sherwood) over her family.
