Emilia Jones

The winner of three Academy Awards including Best Picture of 2022, CODA stars Emilia Jones as the only hearing member of her deaf family (Troy Kotsur, Marlee Matlin, and Daniel Durant) whose reliance chafes on the high school senior who, despite loving them, wants a life outside the family. She finds this unexpectedly by following a cute boy (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) into choir where Ruby discovers she has a talent for singing that might lead to a future she could never have dreamed of.

In what I’d refer to as a Coyote Ugly ending, the plot falls a bit into cliché with Ruby running late to a life-changing audition without ever working out the logistics of the happy ending it promises. Despite this, the film is a moving experience highlighting the role of an unique individual whose circumstances make her feel like an outcast to the outside world but who, with the help of her teacher (Eugenio Derbez), begins to chase an impossible dream.

Locke & Key - Crown of Shadows television review

I hadn’t read the comic series Locke & Key was based on, and had no real epectations about the series going in. What I found was one of the most solid seasons of any Netflix original show and a welcome surprise that turned out to be far smarter than I would have guessed. The final episode of Locke & Key‘s First Season offers a glimpse behind the mysterious Black Door as Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones), and their friends fight to defeat Dodge (Laysla De Oliveira) who has the Crown of Shadows. The episode makes good use of misdirection here before providing even more surprises in its final moments as that attempt to throw Dodge into the portal has unintended consequences none of the Lockes will become aware of until Season Two.

Locke & Key - Echoes television review

“Echoes” offers answers to several of plot points hinted out throughout Locke & Key‘s First Season as it explores how various characters and events fit together such as the suicide that kicked off the series and just how Dodge (Laysla De Oliveira) came to be. We also get to view the past six months from the perspective of Ellie (Sherri Saum) which gives context to several of her actions and provides answers about the night Joe died. Thanks to Bode (Jackson Robert Scott) and Rufus (Coby Bird), Tyler (Connor Jessup) and Kinsey (Emilia Jones) have a clue to another key Echo wants to retrieve, although their plan to trap Dodge doesn’t go quite as expected. Eden (Hallea Jones) being attacked by Kinsey’s fear also brings her, Jackie (Genevieve Kang), and the others in on the keys and the bizarre happenings around town since the Lockes returned.

Locke & Key - Dissection television review

In one of the most tense episodes of the show’s First Season, Sam (Thomas Mitchell Barnet) holds the Locke family prisoner in Keyhouse Manor which ends with Dodge (Laysla De Oliveira) having all the keys at her disposal. We also learn what Dodge is after whatever is behind the Black Door and needs the Head Key to discover how to open it. There are some callbacks here from earlier in the season as Kinsey (Emilia Jones) digs up her fear in order to get away from Sam and Tyler (Connor Jessup) discovers the guilt he’s been carrying over his father’s death is misplaced. Although Sam dies in the episode, his use of the Ghost Key does offer the opportunity for the character to return as a ghost.

Locke & Key - The Black Door television review

As Echo (Laysla De Oliveira) moves forward with plan B in getting her hands on more keys by flirting with the self-destructive Tyler (Connor Jessup), who purposefully sabotages his relationship with Jackie (Genevieve Kang), Kinsey (Emilia Jones) plays on the Savini Squad’s need for a new filming location to lead them down into the dangerous sea caves in order to satiate her own curiosity about what secrets they are hiding from her father’s past. While putting the lives of all her new friends in danger, getting more than a little closer to one of the group, and pissing off her boyfriend, Kinsey does manage to find a hidden door deep within the caves promising secrets she is desperate to get her hands on. Obviously the mysterious door will have an important role to play later in the series.
