Wizards Beyond Waverly Place – Something Wizard This Way Comes

Halloween comes to Waverly Place in “Something Wizard This Way Comes.” Apparently, for wizards, Halloween is bit like Christmas (but spookier) with carols, treats, presents, and a visitor who doesn’t so much bring presents but eats children and candy. While no believes Billie‘s (Janice LeAnn Brown)  story of Pumpkin Belly, that doesn’t stop Billie, Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Winter (Taylor Cora) from being eaten by the monster and figuring out a way out (which, honestly, is pretty easy).

Arcane – The Message Hidden Within the Pattern

Is Jayce (Kevin Alejandro) now officially the worst guy ever? There’s a moment near the end of “The Message Hidden Within the Pattern” where Jinx (Ella Purnell) and Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) have come together, Vander has been cured by Viktor, the plans of Ambessa (Ellen Thomas) have been stymied, even Caitlyn (Katie Leung) has seen the error of her ways, and all is right with the world. I feel as if I skipped several episodes of this series which would help explain Jayce’s now murderous obsession with destroying Hextech which I don’t believe has been adequately explained on-screen. That said, enter Jayce to destroy everything ending perhaps the show’s best episode on one hell of a sad note.

Guilty Pleasure – Krull

Flashback Friday takes us back to 1983, a young king, a captured queen, a motley band of heroes, a quest across a desolate landscape, some questionable special effects, a monstrous beast, a prophecy, and a fortress that relocates across the planet at every dawn. A sword-and-sorcery epic with sci-fi trapping such as alien soldiers with laser rifles, Krull introduces us to Prince Colwyn (Ken Marshall) and Princess Lyssa (Lysette Anthony) whose marriage will unite two warring kingdoms against an invading alien force until they steal the bride on her wedding day.

Arcane – Blisters and Bedrock

“Blisters and Bedrock” underlines a truth about Arcane I’ve noticed more and more across its two seasons. When the focus remains largely on Jinx (Ella Purnell) and Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) I’m completely on-board. However, the further the series deviates from these two characters the less interested I’ve become. Thankfully, “Blisters and Bedrock” gives us the sisters reunited in search of their dead father who isn’t actually dead and is now an unstoppable werewolf. Don’t you hate it when that happens? The storyline is the focus of much of the episode, finishing in a proper (if bizarre) family reunion, leaving the less interesting plots and characters to fill in gaps here and there.

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place – Saved by the Spell

The best thing about this episode of sending Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) to a non-magical school for the first time is the pun in its title (sadly the episode doesn’t feature Billie stopping time and directly speaking to the audience). Despite being told “no magic,” Billie uses plenty in her attempt to win over Roman‘s (Alkaio Thiele) best friend Winter (Taylor Cora) after striking out making friends of her own. Playing on the tease from the previous episode we also see a phantomus drawn to the school by Billie’s magic and attack Roman (after he steals her wand).
