Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Southern Air Temple

Wayback Wednesday takes us back to the world of elemental benders and a 12 year-old boy destined to return balance to the Four Nations. The reality of the world he’s lost hits home for Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen) when he, Katara (Mae Whitman), and Sokka (Jack De Sena) reach the ruins of the Southern Air Temple. Upon discovering the skeleton of his friend and mentor Gyatso (Sab Shimono), Aang unintentionally enters his Avatar state and alerts the world to his return. The episode is also notable for introducing the winged lemur Momo who joins the group on their travels and for the subplot in which Prince Zuko (Dante Basco) defeats Commander Zhao (Jason Isaacs) in a contest that proves his skill and alludes to how the prince received his scar.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians - We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium

After an introductory episode that led to Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) realizing he’d been lied to his entire life and introduced him to the magical world which was more than just his imagination, and a second episode that dramatically increased the amount of information and characters of the magical world in fleshing out the unfortunately named Camp Half Blood (only to have nearly all those characters and setting be immediately removed from the ongoing narrative), Percy sets out on his quest with Annabeth (Leah Jeffries) and Grover (Aryan Simhadri). “We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium” is the best of the uneven series so far foreshadow trouble for the quest, disagreements among the trio, and a run-in with Medusa (Jessica Parker Kennedy). While still very much Harry Potter-lite, at least the actual storyline of Percy’s quest has begun.

Wonka

The attempt to tell the origin story for Roald Dahl‘s famous eccentric chocolatier is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand we get Timothée Chalamet as the still naive young man seeking his fortune creating chocolate for the world to enjoy which provides the heart of the film. There’s enough here that we can see the possibility of this version of Willy Wonka growing into the far more gruff character we see played by Gene Wilder. On the other hand we’re left with a script that turns out to have little to do with chocolate and more to do with crazy antics, involving bumbling bad guys, really only suited for small children.
