Doctor StrangeFirst introduced in Marvel Comics back 1963, Doctor Stephen Strange finally makes it to the big screen in the latest entry to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although Marvel Studios has dipped their toe in the water previously with Thor and its sequel, this time the studio dives head first into the mystical for the origin of a neurosurgeon who became the Sorcerer Supreme (Earth’s primary mystical protector).

More notable for its look than plot, Doctor Strange is a visible smorgasbord of delight. After the perfunctory set-up where we’re introduced to a genius/asshole surgeon (Benedict Cumberbatch) whose life turns on a dime with a single event, we follow Strange on his journey to learn the mystical arts in hope of reclaiming what he has lost. That journey takes him to Nepal where he encounters the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) and his understanding of the world is forever changed.

Following the basic layout of The Matrix, Strange moves from non-believer to the most powerful wizard ever over the course of the film. It may have taken Luke Skywalker three movies to become a proper Jedi, but like Neo the Doc only needs about 90 minutes.

Lucifer - Monster

A growing need to be punished for the death his brother Uriel (Michael Imperioli) leads Lucifer (Tom Ellis) on a downward spiral of guilt and depression. Compromising Chloe‘s (Lauren German) case by taking even more liberties than usual, Lucifer is eventually benched with only this alcohol and self-pity to keep him company. If last week was a major turning point in the series, “Monster” continues that trend as the Devil now sees himself as someone in desperate need to face punishment for his actions. Unable to be honest with Chloe about the cause of his malaise, Lucifer instead reveals himself to Linda (Rachael Harris) leaving no doubt whatsoever in the doctor’s mind just who and what Lucifer truly is.

Once Upon a Time - Dark Waters

While the Aladdin (Deniz Akdeniz) storyline gets pushed to one of the episode’s subplots, “Dark Waters” picks up a thread of Hook’s (Colin O’Donoghue) past as the pirate confronts the appearance of Captain Nemo (Faran Tahir) and the Nautilus in both the present and in flashbacks. Tying in the theme of the Evil Queen‘s (Lana Parrilla) attempts to sow dissension among the heroes, the villain reveals Hook’s refusal to destroy the shears to Henry. Bringing the kid’s resentment to the pirate’s growing role in his family, the pair eventually come to an understanding as Henry helps Hook deal with one of his biggest regrets which has coming calling.

Lucifer - The Weaponizer

Lucifer‘s Second Season takes a dark turn with the arrival of Lucifer’s brother Uriel (Michael Imperioli). Given his power to see and change patterns to fit his desired outcome, the angel arranges for Chloe‘s (Lauren German) car crash to get his brother’s attention. Uriel’s powers are actually quite fascinating, and I’m curious to see what else God’s other children might be able to do. Giving Lucifer an ultimatum of 24 hours, Lucifer must either turn over his Mum (Tricia Helfer) to his brother or watch Chloe die. As usual, Lucifer finds a third option out of his problem, but the choices he makes at the end of the episode are likely to haunt the character for some time to come.
