With the Flash (Grant Gustin) trapped inside the Speed Force his friends and family are left to deal with the consequences of the experiment to restore his speed. While Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) recovers quickly from being knocked unconscious from the controlled particle-accelerator explosion, Jesse Quick (Violett Beane) languishes in an unexplained coma just as Barry once did (suggesting her foray into super-speed crime-fighting may come before Wally’s). Aside from trying to lure Barry back from the limbo he’s trapped in, his friends also must deal with zombified Girder (Greg Finley) whose form was reanimated by the shockwave.

Although we see none of the Flash in action, aside from Cisco‘s (Carlos Valdes) parlor tick of using a hologram in an attempt to convince the people of Central City that their hero hasn’t abandoned them, “Rupture” may prove a pivotal episode not only in the season but the entire series. Offering the return of John Wesley Shipp, a new meta-human in the evil doppelganger of Cisco’s brother (Nicholas Gonzalez), the return of Zoom (Teddy Sears) and the beginning of his reign of terror on this Earth, and giving us the origins for two new speedsters in Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale) and Jesse Quick (Violett Beane), the main focus of “Rupture” focuses in the internal struggle of Barry (Grant Gustin) weighing the costs of a risky opportunity to regain his speed.

In an episode that begins with a flashback to Earth-2, “Versus Zoom” gives us darker version of the origins of Barry (Grant Gustin) as we witness the tragedy of Hunter Zolomon’s childhood which would lead him down the path to taking on the personas of both Jay Garrick and Zoom (Teddy Sears). Opening with a sequence that helps explain Barry’s short stint on Supergirl, the episode is mainly concerned with the Flash and his friends setting another trap for Zoom which, to absolutely no one’s surprise, goes wrong.
