The Flash returns for its Eighth Season with part one of a five-week opening arc which promises the return of several Arrowverse familiar faces, starting with the return of Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer who arrives in Central City for a Tech Conference. “Part 1” sees the return of a new low-budget version of the Royal Flush Gang to Central City making a series of high-tech crimes while also arranging prison escapes and train crashes to keep the Flash (Grant Gustin) occupied elsewhere while working on a big cryptocurrency heist of Central City’s casinos. Although the Scarlet Speedster takes care of them easily enough, we also get an appearance of Tony Curran as Despero as a much more fearsome foe who arrives from the future looking for a speedster to kill.

• Title: The Flash – Heart of the Matter (Part 1)

As expected, The Flash pulls in several familiar faces for the show’s 150th episode which also acts as the first-half of the season finale. The various Godspeeds continue to war across the city. Team Flash’s plan to take them down fails and alerts Barry (Grant Gustin) to the fact that the Godspeeds have an added hate for Bart (Jordan Fisher). The episode does offer the return of John Wesley Shipp as Jay Garrick, although he’s mostly used as a hostage, as well as the return of one of the show’s recently departed cast members. Suffering defeat, with Bart in a coma and no plan on how to defeat the Godspeeds, Barry prepares to enter the mind of an amnesiac time-traveler (Karan Oberoi) hoping to find answers on how he can save his city and perhaps alter the future to keep his children safe.

Godspeeds from the future are wreaking havoc on Central City searching for August Heart (Karan Oberoi) who is trapped in the present but without any memory of who he is or why the Godspeeds want him. Barry (Grant Gustin) also discovers his wife’s grip on the timeline is in jeopardy as his fears nearly consume him about the uncertain future of his family. However, the episode is most memorable for it’s guest-stars. First, we get John Diggle (David Ramsey) showing up with A.R.G.U.S. tech to help fight the Godspeeds (and running from a destiny that was teased in Arrow‘s finale) and, helping to set the stage for next week’s 150th episode, we get the return of XS (Jessica Parker Kennedy) and the introduction of Impulse (Jordan Fisher).
