Hawkeye doesn’t skimp on action in the finale was we get Kate (Hailee Steinfeld) vs. Yelena (Florence Pugh), Echo (Alaqua Cox) taking some vengeance, and our two archers struggling to stay alive against wave after wave of baddies thrown their way by the Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio). There’s trick arrows, characters jumping off a buildings, and the Kingpin shrugging off everyone’s best shots. Hell, even the ridiculous swordsman gets into the action, albeit not on the side you would expect given events of previous episodes.

Hawkeye – Ronin

“Ronin” is notable for people telling Kate (Hailee Steinfeld) to stay away from Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner). This includes her mother (Vera Farmiga), Clint himself, and Yelena (Florence Pugh) who shows up in Kate’s apartment for a little chat about her new best friend. Starting here, and continuing through the series finale, the scenes between Kate and Yelena prove to be some of the best of the series (although we don’t get nearly as much interaction between Yelena and Clint as I expected).

Although Clint (Jeremy Renner) will push her away again by the end of the episode, “Partners, Am I Right?” focuses mainly on the unexpected partnership between Hawkeye and Kate (Hailee Steinfeld). There are a lot of little pieces her involving looking into Kate’s crooked stepfather-to-be and his connection to the Tracksuit Mafia, the return of the LARPers, another run-in with Echo (Alaqua Cox), Kate guessing the truth of Ronin, and trap involving another item stolen from the Avengers which leads to the introduction of Yelena (Florence Pugh), which was teased at the end of Black Widow.

Black Widow movie reviewThe movie Marvel Studios didn’t want to make finally sees the light of day. Despite being the first female hero introduced in the MCU, Marvel seemed to have no interest in giving Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) her own film until the financial success of Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel forced their hand.

First, let me say that I’m glad we get a Black Widow movie. The character rocks, Johansson is brought back with her deadpan wisecracks, and it’s thoroughly, unapologetically, over-the-top during its climactic bat-shit-crazy battle sequences.

Little Women

Little Women movie reviewGreta Gerwig becomes the latest to adapt Louisa May Alcott’s popular novel (over the years it has been adapted more than a dozen times to film and television as well as both a musical and opera). The semi-autobiographical tale follows the lives of the four March sisters (Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, and Eliza Scanlen) following the Civil War.

Saoirse Ronan gets the most screentime as the rebellious Jo, a writer with dreams and desires that don’t always fit the conventions of her time. Watson is perhaps underused as the elder and more conventional Meg, while Pugh sinks her teeth into the more complex Amy. Scanlen is put to good use as the tragic and talented Beth. And Timothée Chalamet smolders as the boy next door.

The film is divided into later years with Jo in New York and Amy in Paris with flashbacks to the family all living under the same roof. The structure allows Gerwig to highlight themes that repeat and keep coming back to the tight family unit even after tragedy and time have taken their toll on the March family.
