“The game of professional football has come of age.”

The year was 1925 and professional football was a joke and losing money fast.  Out of money and options Dodge Connelly (George Clooney), the owner, captain, and marketer of the Duluth Bulldogs, comes up with a plan to save the sport by offering college stand-out and war hero Carter Rutherford (John Krasinski) a spot on the team.

The film has both big jokes and a sly wit.  Dodge, it turns out, is the game’s best promoter, and does what it takes to make his meal-ticket into a star even at the cost of his own glory.  Although the film takes pleasure in Dodge’s loosing influence over the team and the sport, if you watch closely you will also notice Dodge slowly helping out and making sure it’s Carter’s play which gets celebrated.

“I’m not a miracle worker; I’m the janitor.”

michael-clayton-poster

Michael Clayton (George Clooney) is a lawyer, though not in the traditional public perception of the term.  Michael doesn’t practice law, he doesn’t show up in court, and he doesn’t work on legal documents behind the scenes.  Michael is the firm’s “fixer” who comes in to solve problems.  Some refer to him as a miracle worker but in his own words he’s a bag man, a janitor who is called in to clean up the mess.  And he’s the best at what he does.

The firm’s latest problem involves its senior litigating partner Arthur Edens (Tom Wilkinson), a manic depressive off his medication who seems to have lost his mind.  After Arthur undresses in a deposition and proclaims his love to the plaintiff (Merrit Weaver) in a three-billion dollar case which in which he is defending U-North, a company who is merging with his law firm, Michael is sent to straighten his friend out.  But the more time he spends on the case the more questions are raised about the cause of his friend’s behavior and the validity of the plaintiff’s claims.

George Clooney, Bernie Mac, Brad Pitt, Elliott Gould, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Don Cheadle and Julia Roberts play off one another as if they have been acting together all their life. With a cast like this do you need any other reason to watch such a film, besides the excitement and the magic?

Close to the 1960’s Ocean’s Eleven, here is an exciting adventure and puzzle to watch. Ocean’s Eleven starts with a bang and ends with a complacent group standing in front of the Bellagio fountain light show. Danny Ocean (George Clooney), recently released from jail, gathers just the right group of con artists, pick pockets and immoral crew to pull off the biggest con ever, robbing three Vegas casinos owned by Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia). Amongst the talented crew is the dashing and always eating Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt), a young pup of a pickpocket Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon), and a British accent pyro Basher Tarr (Don Cheadle).
