Green Lantern #49

Green Lantern #49There’s an interesting idea at the heart of Green Lantern #49, unfortunately there’s also several head-scratching moments that distract what should be a strong issue leading up to the big throwdown between Green Lantern and Parallax next month.

Sonar has apparently gotten the entire world to cower in fear while the United Nation debates giving into the super-villain’s demands (and apparently every other hero on the planet Earth has taken the day off). Guessing correctly about the madman’s plans for the ambassadors, Hal is able to step in and prevent a blood bath in the U.N., although the villain escapes leaving the story unfinished.

Green Lantern #48

Green Lantern #48Following the amusement park bombing that left his nephew in a coma, Hal Jordan heads to Gotham in search of answers about Sonar, the leader of a terrorist group claiming responsibility for the attack and threatening others if the United Nations refuses to give into his demands. The appearance of Batman Stand-in #7, or whatever this guy’s name is, attempts to play on the complicated relationship between Batman and Green Lantern but doesn’t have anywhere to go. Considering as a member of the Justice League there would be any number of other ways for Jordan to get the intelligence other than just showing up in the middle of Gotham (he doesn’t even go to the Batcave?) the entire sequence doesn’t make much sense.

Green Lantern #47

Green Lantern #47The latest issue of Green Lantern takes a break from Hal Jordan‘s space adventures and his investigation into the disappearance of the Green Lantern Corps as Hal returns home for some momentary rest and relaxation with his family. That isn’t the only surprise in the issue as writer Robert Venditti not only provides some local trouble for Jordan to solve but also reveals the identity of the villain lurking just behind-the-scenes.

I’ve actually enjoyed Green Lantern’s return to more space-centric title, but Green Lantern #47 works in allowing Hal to reconnect with his family (and get a much needed makeover). I expect the trouble at the fair to wrap up quickly. The bigger issue for our hero is the appearance of Parallax whose existence creates all kinds of questions (I’m guessing this is some sort of fallout from DC’s Convergence storyline). Whatever the cause, an universe with both a good and evil lanterned-powered Hal Jordan probably spells trouble for everyone involved.

Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom!

  • Title: LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes: Attack of the Legion of Doom!
  • wiki: link

Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom!Despite unfortunately trapping our heroes in their less colorful and far blander New 52 costumes, the follow-up to LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League proves to be even more entertaining than the original. In Super-Friends style, LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes: Attack of the Legion of Doom! gives us an entire legion of villains teaming together to take down the Justice League.

Bringing back the core group from the first movie, with the exception of replacing Guy Gardner with Hal Jordan (Josh Keaton) (whose rivalry with the Flash, thankfully still in his classic costume, proves to be a fun running gag), the sequel also gives us a cameo by the Trickster (Mark Hamill), whose minifig is included with both the DVD and Blu-ray releases, and makes Batman (Troy Baker) the head of the Justice League as the heroes fight off the new super-villain team and the insecure Cyborg (Khary Payton) learns to grow into his role as a true hero.

Green Lantern #43

Green Lantern #43I’m on the fence about the latest course of Hal Jordan‘s life. On one hand I’m pleased that the comic has (for the most part) appeared to put the rainbow-colored corps in the rear-view mirror and allowed Jordan to wander the spaceways without being marred in the middle of a multi-faceted civil war of power rings. One the other hand I’m far from sold on the character’s new look that strips the character of one of the greatest super-hero costumes of all time for a trench coat covering a much more bland generic jumpsuit. The fact that the new storyline apparently will not only include but feature Black Hand and the resurrection (yet again) of the Black Lanterns is also far from welcome news.
