Phase Four, by far the most experimental and unpredictable phase of the MCU, continues with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) earning his fourth standalone film (moving him past his tie with Captain America and Iron Man). Writer/director Taika Waititi returns for a follow up to Thor: Ragnarok choosing to keep the same tone and humor of that film. If Ragnarok was a 9 on the wacky scale, Love and Thunder is a 12.

What If...? - Episode Two television review

The second episode of What If…? follows much the same formula as the first in swapping out one character for another and observing the changes to the world (or in this case, the galaxy). This time the change involves T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) who is abducted by the Ravagers instead of Peter Quill and grows up to be a far more formidable Star Lord. It’s an odd set-up whose ripples don’t always make sense. Do we really believe T’Challa would be able to convince Thanos not to seek the Infinity Stones? While celebrating Boseman and his beloved character, it also shits pretty hard on the MCU version of Peter Quill who is hard to see as anything more than a total joke by comparison. But it does offer a very different kind of cosmic adventure for the character who apparently is going to get several episodes this season.

Guardians of the Galaxy #1

Guardians of the Galaxy #1 comic reviewIf you are thinking, didn’t Marvel just reboot this series less than a year ago? You are not mistaken. Marvel Comics relaunches the title once more with Peter Quill and Rocket Raccoon being pulled into the fray by Richard Rider who is seeking any heroes he can find to help stop the sudden appearance of of the Olympian Gods who are making a deadly swath across the galaxy.

While I’m not wild with the art from Juan Cabal, especially the look of Star-Lord (what’s up with the slicked-back hair and skinny jumpsuit?), I will admit I do kinda dig Rocket in a suit. The choice of Peter to answer the call against Gamora‘s wishes, and without her help, also means the full roster isn’t going to be on display (at least not at the beginning of the adventure).
