Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

  • Title: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I

There is a point not too far into Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 where Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) informs Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) that everything going on, the sacrifices being made, the world falling into darkness, isn’t only about him. This is a sentiment backed-up by the rest of the film. Harry might still be the most important character, but he’s certainly not the only character.

There are several telling differences here. The first scene in the film doesn’t involve Harry at all, but Hermoine (Emma Watson) and the difficult choice she makes with respect to her “Muggle” parents (Ian Kelly, Michelle Fairley). If this dramatic opening isn’t enough to clue you in we’re in for a far darker Harry Potter then scene directly following will leave you no doubt.

Seems Warner Bros. is raising the stakes with the final Harry Potter book, broken into two films, or at least that’s what their marketing department would have you believe. Trumpeting Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I as “The Motion Picture Event of a Generation” may be just a wee bit much, but I’ll let you watch for yourselves. Harry’s final journey begins on November 19th with Part I’s release. Part II is set to follow next summer.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Being a Harry Potter fan and a film snob is not easy. Though Chris Columbus’ films were decent, the only adaptation that really worked was 2004’s The Prisoner of Azkaban. With that single concession, we the faithful have just had to sit around and take it from Warner Bros. as they haphazardly adapted the books into competent but lacking films.

On various occasions, I admit, I day-dreamt of getting that phone call offering me the job of directing the next HP feature – which I’d nail and rock the pants off of, obviously. But having just seen The Half-Blood Prince, I’m shocked but very pleased to say that my services were not at all needed on this sixth movie.

Death Done Right

I’ve been reading the Harry Potter series for just over nine years now.  I’ve spent countless hours reading and rereading the books, discussing them with my friends, and even protesting a radio station for ruining the last book’s ending on-air before I finished it.  With all of my history with the books, is it even close to possible for series author J.K. Rowling to end this story that I’ve grown up with to my satisfaction?

The book starts out in line with the other six entries into the series.  Harry gets picked up from Number Four, Privet Drive and is escorted to the Burrow for another half-summer spent with the Weasleys.  The only difference is that on the way there, Harry is nearly murdered and one of his friends actually is.  Rowling makes it fairly clear from the beginning: this is war.  People are going to die and they won’t stop dying unless the enemy bites the dust himself.

Harry Potter, the Adventure Concludes

Better watch out Muggles!  After taking over the movie theaters last week the legions of Harry Potter fans are about to descend on your local bookstores.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final entry into the series by J.K. Rowlings is scheduled to be released at 12:01 am on July 21.  Many bookstores around the country are staying open late to hold Harry Potter parties and promote the book’s release.  Will Harry die?  Will Voldermort be defeated?  Will Ron and Hermoine get together?  Will this be a satisfactory conlcusion to the series?  All these questions, hopefully, will be answered in a few days.
