Hawaii Five-0 - O ke kumu, o ka mana, ho'opuka 'ia TV review

An old friend from Adam‘s (Ian Anthony Dale) past shows up at Five-0 needing help on her wedding day. The daughter of a local Yakuza boss (Sonny Saito), Tamiko’s (Brittany Ishibashi) husband-to-be has vanished. Knowing that he was an FBI agent secretly working undercover leads Five-0 to initially suspect Tamiko’s father but evidence soon points Five-0 in a new direction. Investigating the fiance’s previous cases leads to a new suspect with reason enough to seek revenge (although the Yakuza manages to catch up to the killer first to deliver their own justice). The storyline ends ominously as the Yakuza boss makes a prediction about Adam’s inevitable return to his old life. Is this just an empty threat or foreshadowing of things to come?

The death of a fake window washer who it turns out was one of the world’s most famous graffiti artists allows for the return of Gerard Hirsch (Willie Garson) when Five-0 reaches out to the former art forger for help in identifying the victim. I’m always happy to see Garson, although his return is a sad reminder that White Collar is no longer on the air. While false leads initially point to motives tied to the victim’s art, Five-0 uncovers the real target to be the woman (Patricia Velasquez) the artist was harboring. Her outspoken nature about the evils of her government has branded her a traitor they would go to any lengths to see silenced (including killing the artist and torturing his agent for information).

Pairing up Danny (Scott Caan) and McGarrett‘s (Alex O’Loughlin) for their own subplot of providing protection to Danny’s former mother-in-law (Joan Collins) leaves the rest of Five-0 to investigate the person responsible for spiking a supply of steroids leading to murder. Given the amount of time focused on Danny and Steve waiting on the famous author, it’s a bit surprising that the subplot’s payoff turns out to be so weak. While Amanda Savage explains her boorish behavior to her former son-in-law, she never apologizes for it (nor does her explanation excuse her actions). The storyline allows Danny to act as her punching bag, a common role for the character, while McGarret receives only her charm (only infuriating Det. Williams all the more).

The arrival of a hurricane crates dangerous situations for most members of Five-0. While Tani (Meaghan Rath) and Junior (Beulah Koale) are tasked with helping with the evacuation, a duty which will lead Tani into trouble when trying to convince a family from leaving their home, the Iolani Palace is tasked with being a shelter for those running from the storm which gets more complicated by the arrival of the FBI and their prisoner (Raoul Trujillo) who is known for his prison escapes. The only member of Five-0 not to have a stressful night is Danny (Scott Caan) who gives shelter to Rachel (Claire van der Boom) and Charlie (Zach Sulzbach) during the storm.

Hawaii Five-0 - Hala I Ke Ala O'i'ole Mai television review

Hawaii Five-0 returns from winter hiatus with McGarrett‘s (Alex O’Loughlin) and Catherine (Michelle Borth) in Montana torturing a prisoner for information about the location of the man (Ben Youcef) responsible for the death of Joe White (Terry O’Quinn) and four other SEALs. With Danny (Scott Caan), Junior (Beulah Koale), and Wade (David Keith) in tow, the pair head off to Laos to rendezvous with super-spy Harry Langford (Chris Vance) to infiltrate a highly-secure skyscraper, find their target, and get some justice for their fallen friend.
