Three years after an invasion of generic unstoppable CGI monsters, where humanity’s few survivors are living at high elevation deep in the mountains, we’re introduced to Will (Anthony Mackie), his son Hunter (Danny Boyd Jr.), the haunted Nina (Morena Baccarin), and the tough-talking Katie (Maddie Hasson). Needing medicine for his son, Will and the two women set off on a dangerous journey across the mountains.

Ghosts of Mars

Not exactly the best of John Carpenter‘s career, Ghosts of Mars gives us Natasha Henstridge as the lone surviving member of a squad (which also includes Jason Statham and Pam Grier) on a terraformed Mars sent to retrieve a prisoner (Ice Cube) from a small mining town. Told mostly through flashbacks, with inserts for Lieutenant Melanie Ballard’s deposition, the officer tells an outrageous story that somehow doesn’t seem to raise any red flags for the tribunal who offer few questions, and even less skepticism, about her tale of miners possessed by Martian ghosts slaughtering an entire town.

Goosebumps – Monster Blood

  • Title: Goosebumps: The Vanishing – Monster Blood

“Monster Blood” offers a Blob episode with Cece (Jayden Bartels), and later Devin (Sam McCarthy) and Frankie (Galilea La Salvia), chased around the city and subway by something grown from drippings of the killer car and her kombucha. It’s basic horror, with all kinds of questions such as why the subway is completely abandoned aside from the three kids, but there’s fun to be had. The episode also fills in Cece’s backstory revealing the rather large lie she’s been keeping from everyone. Elsewhere, Anthony (David Schwimmer) continues to struggle to find the missing specimen finding no help from Trey (Stony Blyden) who isn’t sure what happened to him. The two stories converge in the final few minutes as Anthony’s kids find their father in the ruins of Fort Jerome raising new questions for all about what is going on and who is responsible.

The Shining

While I don’t think the film completely succeeds in explaining all the story elements from Stephen King’s novel, Stanley Kubrick‘s version of The Shining is something to behold. A master visual storyteller, Kubrick brings the empty hotel to life in vivid hues as Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes a job as the caretaker for the Overlook Hotel during the winter months along with his wife (Shelley Duvall) and son (Danny Lloyd).

Goosebumps – The Haunted Car

  • Title: Goosebumps – The Haunted Car

After a flashback introducing and explaining the backstory of Alex (Francesca Noel), who is shown in multiple cameos in the two-part season premiere without explanation, and confirming that her mother (Ana Ortiz) is a piece of shit (and, from what we see in the present, not a very observant parent or cop), “The Haunted Car” picks up with her current situation while also dealing with the fallout of “Stay Out of the Basement” with everyone looking for the missing Trey (Stony Blyden). The two threads converge with Alex and Cece (Jayden Bartels) “borrow” Trey’s now haunted car searching for the person (Ethan Viera) who actually committed the crime she went to juvie for. However, things get bizarre when the car shows a mind of its own.
