Tom (Jeremy Shada) and the other Dragon Riders search for the missing Thunder in the two-part Second Season finale which plays on the previously-established themes of Tom and Thunder often going out on their own and not sharing with the rest of the group. The Riders eventually find Thunder in a previously unexplored portion of the underground world where he is caught in a battle between a much larger Skrill. Several other types of dragons make cameo appearances on the way, reminding viewers of past experiences, but the main story involves surviving the Skrill and the discovery of deeper caverns and artifacts that tie back to How to Train Your Dragon.

While working out some internal conflict between Tom (Jeremy Shada) and D’Angelo (Marcus Scribner), “The Tangled Web” introduces a new species of Spdierwings to the series whose robust webs nearly prove to be the end of and the arachnophobic Jun (Ashley Liao). While the Tom/D’Angelo tension seems ramp-up and then be diffused a bit too conveniently to fit all in the single episode, it does deal with the more rule-abiding and structured Dragon Rider’s conflict over his actions in the caves.

Tom‘s (Jeremy Shada) discovery of some Tidal Dragons comes in handy when an out of control forest fire threatens the area. After chastising him for hiding things from the rest of the riders, Alex (Aimee Garcia) figures out a way to lead the dragons to the fire and help put it out before it reaches ICARIS. The smoke helps hide the dragons for the most part, but although the group manages to stop the fire their activity doesn’t go completely unnoticed. Along with the new dragons, “Downpour” also introduces a potential new adversary for the riders in the irresponsible Buzzsaw (Haley Joel Osment) who started the fire but blames the mysterious lightning bird he sees in the smoky aftermath for his own misfortune.

Dragons: The Nine Realms – Dragons of the Undead

“Dragons of the Undead” is all about getting the shyest member of Dragon Club some confidence as Alex (Aimee Garcia) is forced to step-up after her dragon Feathers is kidnapped by what the kids mistake for a crowd of zombie dragons. The truth to the dragons turns out to be far different that what appearance may suggest. The look of the dragons works, even if that means we get stuck with D’Angelo (Marcus Scribner) thinking he might be turning into a zombie in what becomes the episode’s running gag. Thanks to Alex’s quick thinking, Feathers is saved, and their work together helps uncover the true nature of the strange dragons.

Dragons: The Nine Realms – Magma Breather

While the episode introduces a new dragon which gives the episode its title, “Magma Breather” is primarily about Tom (Jeremy Shada) attempting to prevent his mother, and her new rival, from uncovering the dragon cave while exploring the area for mineral deposits. With Tom attempting to stall his mother, the rest of Dragon Club kinda, sorta, (but not really) works to collapse the entrance into the larger club while really just getting miffed at D’Angelo‘s (Marcus Scribner) attempts to take command of them in Tom’s absence. While tempted to tell his mother the truth, the secret remains safely hidden for another episode.
