“We in Danger, Girl” and “Bad Magic” are where Riri Williams‘ (Dominique Thorne) life takes a turn. More interested in investigating the Hood‘s (Anthony Ramos) than doing her part in the next heist, for no real reason other than curiosity, Riri nearly botches another robbery and her actions not only cause to be killed (Manny Montana) but also throw the life of Joe (Alden Ehrenreich), who it turns out isn’t really Joe, into chaos allowing the Hood to recruit him as well. The two episode arc is all about bad decisions and regret and Riri creating a number of enemies who now want her dead. Of course what this means is that Riri doesn’t get to make a hero turn but will be forced into becoming on due the fallout of her own actions.  That’s not the most intriguing hero’s journey.

Ironheart – Will the Real Natalie Please Stand Up?

The second episode of Ironheart gives us  Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) freaking out about her successful artificial intelligence which her subconscious crafted off of the memories of her dead best friend Natalie (Lyric Ross). We also get Riri meeting, and blackmailing, a black market tech collector (Alden Ehrenreich) for pieces necessary to patch her armor heading into her first job with the Hood‘s (Anthony Ramos) crew (which is successful, but a bit more complicated than necessary with N.A.T.A.L.I.E.’s continued distractions). It, like the first episode, is largely fine, and Riri’s interaction with a character who is more important than he initially appears gives us some fun moments, but the heist is rather bland and I’m still waiting for things to pick up which we probably won’t get until Riri’s eventual hero turn that seems pretty far off at this point.

Ironheart – Take Me Home

Originally planned for a 2023 release, Dominique Thorne reprises her role of Riri Williams from Wakanda Forever who, for no real reason, left the comforts of Wakanda at the end of the movie despite it being obviously the perfect place for her to continue her education. As the series needs to break the character down, in terms of the story it wants to tell, that means we’re reintroduced to Riri as a struggling college student at MIT who, despite her intelligence and skill, relies on under-the-table deals to fix other students’ projects for the money needed to explore her own interest of recreating an Iron Man suit (which, she already accomplished in Wakanda, and also again at MIT).
