Pretty Little Liars - Game Over, Charles

The Summer finale of Pretty Little Liars answers several questions including the identity of Red Coat to be Sara (Dre Davis) and the identity of the Liars nemesis A as CeCe Drake (Vanessa Ray). In a bizarre episode that confirms CeCe Drake is, or at least was, Charles DiLaurentis the finale ends the storyline and timeline of the show as we know it. Filling in the gaps to explain the murders of several key supporting characters over the years, CeCe explains all to Alison (Sasha Pieterse) while Aria (Lucy Hale), Hanna (Ashley Benson), Spencer (Troian Bellisario), Emily (Shay Mitchell), and Mona (Janel Parrish) can do nothing but watch A unmask and explain her actions over the past five years.

Pretty Little Liars - O Brother, Where Art Thou

The occasion of Charles DiLaurentis’s birthday, and the notes left at the DiLaurentis home, force Alison‘s (Sasha Pieterse) father to grab his daughter and run while Jason (Drew Van Acker) chooses to stay and confront the brother who he only half-remembers as an imaginary friend. News on Charles’ return also bolsters the Liars into making a stand to take down A once and for all, but, as is the running theme of the show, things don’t go according to plan. Once again the Liars come up empty while unintentionally costing Jason his one shot at bringing his brother in peacefully (or getting stabbed in the neck in an empty warehouse and left for dead, you never know with A).

“Bitch chipped us!”

Pretty Little Liars - No Stone Unturned

The red herring of Lesli Stone (Elizabeth McLaughlin) will keep the Liars busy for most of the episode, while allowing Hanna (Ashley Benson) to perform some grand theft auto and lead the girls to discover A‘s ability to track them (which their prolonged stay in the hospital didn’t reveal?), but by the end of “No Stone Unturned” the Liars‘ focus will return to finding Charles DiLaurentis who even his father has begun to suspect is still alive. Aria (Lucy Hale) is the only Liar directly targeted in the episode as she returns to the junkyard to find a new disturbing gift from their tormentor and struggles as her feelings for Ezra (Ian Harding) begin to resurface, but has she waited too long to act on them?

Pretty Little Liars - She's No Angel

“She’s No Angel” brings Lesli Stone (Elizabeth McLaughlin) back to Rosewood in an episode that further confuses the truth about Charles DiLaurentis by suggesting, not for the first time, that A might be a woman. Spencer‘s (Troian Bellisario) nightmares about a young girl she believes may have been kept in the dollhouse leads her and Hanna (Ashley Benson) back to Radley where Spencer’s dream comes more into focus and, thanks to Mona (Janel Parrish), the pair make an important discovery linking Lesli to both Radley and Charles.

“Who is Charles DiLaurentis?”

Pretty Little Liars - Game On, Charles

Picking up directly following the events of last season’s finale, the Liars‘ first escape attempt fails leaving them at the mercy of A for another three weeks (with each Liar separately facing unseen punishment from their captor) before the group is brought back together for another attempt. Weeks without their loved ones has made Ezra (Ian Harding), Toby (Keegan Allen), Caleb (Tyler Blackburn), and Alison (Sasha Pieterse) desperate enough to attempt to use Alison as bait to find their missing friends. Although the episode ends with a victory over A and an end to their Liars‘ imprisonment, each is left with the scars of their time held hostage and unanswered questions about Charles DiLaurentis (who they believe is the true identity of their adversary).
