While the larger story of “Joy to the World” involves a the creation of a man-made star capable of destroying the Earth being handed off to innocents transformed into brainwashed couriers, the latest Doctor Who Christmas episode is most notable for the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) being force to stop running, for an entire year, and wait. The episode plays on similar themes to “The Power of Three” when the Doctor (Matt Smith) stayed with Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) for an extended period on Earth, but this time the Doctor is forced to make his own fun with some Christmas trappings thrown in as well.

The Bubble

While I believe it’s possible to make a satire about the struggles of filmmaking during the pandemic, 2022’s The Bubble is not that film. Writer/director Judd Apatow‘s lazy comedy goes for cheap jokes earning few laughs. The premise is simple enough, the cast (Karen Gillan, Pedro Pascal, Leslie Mann, David Duchovny, Keegan-Michael Key, and Guz Khan) of one of the world’s biggest action franchises agree to quarantine in an English hotel and make the next film in the franchise while interacting with the film’s crew, the TikTok guest-star (Iris Apatow), hotel staff, and COVID security officer (Harry Trevaldwyn).

Jumanji: The Next Level brings back the cast of 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle for another trip into the video game version of Jumanji as Spencer’s (Alex Wolff) friends follow when the isolated college Freshman goes looking for something familiar. This time around, however, the players are all in different avatars and two of the players have been replaced by Spencer’s grandfather (Danny DeVito) and his former business partner (Danny Glover).
I wasn’t all that impressed with the 2017 film which was fun at times but also lazy and largely forgettable, and The Next Level offers more of the same: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson smoldering, characters hashing out their issues while running for their lives, and Karen Gillan running around the jungle in short-shorts. The addition of the older players does offer some new dynamics (along with quite a few easy old people don’t understand technology jokes), and having none of the players in the avatars they expected is one of the sequel’s best choices.
