Director Colin Minihan‘s Coyotes is a lame thriller about inconsistently-designed bloodthirsty CGI coyotes terrorizing a family in the Hollywood Hills. Clocking in with a 92-minute run-time, it’s still far too long for a threadbare premise and a complete lack of style or thrills.

Yeah, it’s a simple love story. Boy loves girl. Girl falls for more accomplished boy. A more modern take on the Bye, Bye Birdie story is so delightful that I actually prefer it to the original play and its other film versions. In the hands of director Robert Luketic and screenwriter Victor Levin such a predictable story is given class and charm up the whazoo. And so what we get is a well told and engaging story about great love that changes your life.
Sweet down home Rosalee Futch (Kate Bosworth) works at the Piggy Wiggly with her “Pete friend” (Topher Grace) and her “Cathy friend” (Ginnifer Goodwin). The three musketeers work together and hang out at the local pub where the bartender (Kathryn Hahn) has made her feelings about Pete a little too clear. Pete however has been harboring feelings for Rosalee for years and thinks he is finally ready to admit his love. In a comedy this is where something usually goes amiss.

The movie centers around Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess), a promising mathematican at MIT who has been accepted to Harvard Medical School but lacks the funds to enroll.
Ben is approached by one of his professors (Kevin Spacey) and offered a unique opportunity to join a team of talented students (Kate Bosworth, Aaron Yoo, Liza Lapira, Jacob Pitts) who count cards in Vegas during the weekend. At first Ben refuses the offer, but the temptation is strong, especially when the girl he has lusted over for months, Jill (Bosworth), begs him to join the team. And after all Ben can always stop after he earns enough for school. Yeah, right.
When the film deals with temptation, it works amazingly well. Ben is thrust into a world, despite his intelligence and talent, he is ill-prepared for. He becomes disconnected from his best friends (Josh Gad, Sam Golzari), lies to his mother (Helen Carey), and becomes completely infatuated with winning and the new lifestyle which comes with it.

What’s with Hollywood and rubberized super hero suits? Is there some kind of run on cloth? Did they buy it all in bulk a few years ago and have to use it all up before buying something new? Anyway…
Superman Returns isn’t a great super hero flick, but it does have charm and heart which left me happy, though not ecstatic, with the outcome. Given its similarities, it’s impossible to not compare it to Donner’s original, and find it wanting. Still, in a summer that’s given us X-Men: The Last Stand and Nacho Libre this Superman looks damn good.
Five years ago (sometime not long after the events of Superman II) Earth’s scientists found the remains of Krypton and, without saying his goodbyes, Superman left his adopted home. As the movie opens Superman (Brandon Routh) crashes back to Earth on the Kent farm. After a brief talk with Ma Kent (Eva Marie Saint – very nice casting choice!) Clark returns to Metropolis and his life as a reporter for the Daily Planet.
