MacGyver (Lucas Till), Desi (Levy Tran), and Russ (Henry Ian Cusick) go in undercover to protect those who want to prevent a a royal Indian wedding from taking place. The setting offers a chance to explain Desi’s reluctance to consider marriage (i.e. a never-before-mentioned dead fiancé whose body was never recovered) while also laying the rather obvious foundation of what will likely happen to derail their relationship (i.e. the inevitable return of the not-so-dead fiancé). The episode is more memorable for the setting than the mystery as the most obvious character is eventually unmasked as the one attempting to prevent the princess (Aneesha Joshi) from going through with the wedding.

With resources stretched thin, MacGyver (Lucas Till) and Riley (Tristin Mays) are sent to Bosnia to look into a local leader attempting to silence protestors. Using updated technology which Russ (Henry Ian Cusick) identifies as belonging to an old adversary (Jeremy Crutchley), Mac and Riley discover police are using tear gas to insert nanobots into the bodies of the protestors making it easier to track, jail, and permanently silence them. Once infected, Mac and Desi (while working through their own issues) have to work fast in able to keep themselves and the protestors out of the hands of the police while Russ attempts to pump the scientist for the information necessary to shut down the program permanently.

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the original improvisational MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson) armed only with genius-level intellect, a Swiss Army knife, and whatever he can cobble together to solve the problems of the week. After completing a simple handoff, MacGyver runs into trouble making it out of Bulgaria with microfilm when he runs into Penny Parker (Teri Hatcher) at the airport. Attempting to run off from her inattentive boyfriend (Kai Wulff) who turns out to be the son of the nephew of the Bulgarian Secret Police. While worried about the revolutionists and the microfilm, Stephan and his father are also concerned with recovering the jewelry in Penny’s possession which turns out to be priceless giving the state police two reasons to hunt the pair down (and also mistake Penny for a revolutionary).

The identity crisis that has plagued MacGyver’s Fifth Season continues here as Codex appears again as a major threat and then is completely dismantled (again) off-camera. In-between we get MacGyver (Lucas Till), Desi, and Riley (Tristin Mays) in Mexico City searching for a Codex headquarters where they become unsuspecting pawns of Murdoc (David Dastmalchian) and Andrews (Joe Pantoliano) who create a man-made earthquake in an attempted power play to grab control of the disorganized Codex. The earthquake sequences provide some pretty good special effects for the show providing one of the better aspects of the episode as does the reveal of Andrews’ real plan of attempting to earn a role as Codex’s new leader by eliminating MacGyver and his friends (even if the events following it are anti-climactic).

MacGyver - Rails + Pitons + Pulley + Pipe + Salt television review

In Kazakhstan, MacGyver (Lucas Till), Desi , and Riley (Tristin Mays) race to prevent the new version of Codex from getting their hands on Department of Defense secrets. The episode is notable for Mac continuing to try and take larger risks to shield anyone else from harm. However, while he’s scaling a cliff to prevent the intel from being broadcast back to Codex home base, Desi and Riley do just fine on their own taking down the mercenaries thanks to Riley using her own version of MacGyver magic in turning a warehouse against the soldiers. As for Codex, Team MacGyver is left with more questions than answers as it seems the new variation has different motives than the Codex they fought in the past.
