Masters of the Universe

Adam and the Masters of the Universe

  • Title: Masters of the Universe (2026)

The first live-action Masters of the Universe film since 1987, the new film makes notable upgrades in allowing most of the plot to unfold on Eternia (although we do get stuck on Earth for a large section of Act I), throw in more of oddball characters of the franchise (although not as many as you may be expecting), and (perhaps a little too much) discuss who has the power of Grayskull. It’s a more accurate film in honoring the toys and animated series that captured kids’ attention in the 1980s, but is it a better film?

1987 – Masters of the Universe

A disaster so complete it would torpedo the franchise which would wait nearly 40 years for another live-action adaptation, 1987’s Masters of the Universe is a mess of a film that does provide some guilty pleasure vibes in how nearly everyone involved in the enterprise completely misunderstood the assignment. Based on the 80s toy line, and largely ignoring the popular animated series, the film takes He-Man (Dolph Lundgren), Man-At-Arms (Jon Cypher), Teela (Chelsea Field), and Gwildor (Billy Barty) as the first of many substitute characters never seen before, to small town America.

Wayback Wednesday takes us back to Eternia and the Masters of the Universe. The sixth episode produced He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, and the second to be aired, “Teela’s Quest” takes Teela (Linda Gary) on a journey to the Crystal Sea hoping to learn the truth about her real parents from the Oracle. Learning shes’s gone off alone on such a dangerous journey, He-Man (John Erwin) and Battlecat follow as Skeletor (Alan Oppenheimer) dispatches Mer-Man (Oppenheimer) who plans to sacrifice the young warrior to the sea demon Bakkull.

Masters of the Universe: Revolution - Ascension

The two major threads of “Ascension” focus on Adam (Chris Wood) choosing between the crown and He-Man after the arrival of his uncle Keldor (William Shatner) and Teela (Melissa Benoist) beginning her journey to restore Preternia. An invasion by Skeletor (Mark Hamill) and his Motherboard virus which takes a few new victims before being sent packing thanks in large part to Keldor’s heroics making Adam’s choice easier (albeit also tipping the hand to the audience of the obvious twist far, far too soon).

Masters of the Universe: Revolution - Even for Kings

Spinning out of the events of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, the opening episode of Masters of the Universe: Revolution kicks off with a fan-friendly opening battle sequence featuring He-Man (Chris Wood) and several recognizable characters in Subternia fighting to free the souls of fallen friends from Scare Glow (Tony Todd) whose design I still find unfortunately too similar to one of, if not the, most recognizable characters of the franchise. Honestly, there’s not much reason for the likes of Snout Spout, Ram Man, and Buzz Off to be included here other than a bit of fan service for those who collected those figures, but it does deliver a big battle to kick off the new series.
