Throwback Tuesday takes us back 25 years to a film that begins with the destruction of Earth but ends with hope on a new world. The final film of Don Bluth‘s run offering an animation alternative to the far more successful Disney, Titan A.E. stars Matt Damon as a displaced and disaffected human working on alien salvage rigs who is sought out by Korso (Bill Pullman) and his crew who believe Cale‘s genetic heritage is the key to finding a lost spaceship built and hidden by Cale’s father (Ron Perlman) during the destruction of Earth by the alien menace of the Drej.

Returning to theaters for the film’s 25th anniversary, writer/director Kevin Smith‘s Dogma stars Linda Fiorentino as an apathetic Catholic who is chosen by the angel Metatron (Alan Rickman) to prevent two angels from entering a church in New Jersey which, because of a little known loophole in Catholic dogma, would put all of reality at risk. All of this is actually the plan of the demon Azrael (Jason Lee) who has put these events in motion as he would rather destroy reality than return to Hell.

I have to say, I’m really enjoying the last few years of Matt Damon‘s career. You could easily slot Air into an entertaining double-feature with either The Martian or Ford v Ferrari. Using a well-worn Hollywood trope of an underdog fighting the odds, Air stars Damon as Nike salesman Sonny Vaccaro who in the mid-1980s pushed the running shoe company into an unlikely deal by signing rookie basketball star Michael Jordan to an industry-changing contract.

Ford v Ferrari movie review

While I’m not much of a fan of racing, I do love a good racing movie. Based on true events, Ford v Ferrari centers around the friendship of a pair of outcasts who went to work for Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts). Looking to liven-up his brand, and after being embarrassed by failing to buy Ferrari, Ford greenlit plans to develop a Ford racing car capable of beating the dominant Ferrari racing team at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (an event which Ferrari had won four out of the previous five years).

Built on the backs of performances by Matt Damon as former racer turned car designer Carroll Shelby and Christian Bale as race car driver and mechanic Ken Miles, Ford v Ferrari is a little different than many racing films as the main characters aren’t rivals but friends (who, admittedly, occasionally attack each other in public). Despite their disagreements and spats, the screenplay works by selling the audience fairly early on how similar the two men were in their love of cars and racing. Although it relies on a familiar formula, Ford v Ferrari does offer some unpredictable moments, including an ending those unfamiliar with the story may be surprised by.
