2025 turned out to be a good year at the movies with some heavy-hitters topping my list. While my top ten may lack a couple of notable films such as Marty Supreme (which, while I quite enjoyed, never hit with me on an emotional level), it’s an eclectic group across multiple genres including drama, a spy thriller, science fiction, horror, and even a comedy sneaking onto the list. Creed III

You can’t win every fight with your fists. Wait, I guess you can. Those conflicting ideas are at the heart of the convoluted third Creed film (and the first without the participation of Sylvester Stallone) which sets the stage for a serious drama about life after boxing, throws in some bat-shit crazy plot to manufacture a big fight centered around Adonis Creed’s (Michael B. Jordan, who also directs) childhood angst, and then becomes a straightforward Rocky-style boxing movie complete with extended montage and a laughably over-hyped fight to close things out.

Just Mercy movie reviewBased on true experiences of defense attorney Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan), writer/director Destin Daniel Cretton delivers a straightforward biopic that is more about one lawyer’s struggle against a broken legal system than the legal maneuverings of a crafty lawyer. After a brief introduction to the character, the film begins in earnest with Stevenson taking his Harvard education to Alabama to defend those on death row who never received a fair trial.

The film primarily deals with Stevenson’s attempts to earn a new trial for Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx) who was convicted of murder on the testimony of one unreliable witness (Tim Blake Nelson) and no physical evidence thanks in large part to the pressure and intimidation of a local sheriff (Michael Harding) whose motives the film never really examines.

Just Mercy is a solid film filled with actors who have given more memorable roles in other movies. Along with Foxx and Jordan we also get Brie Larson as another member of the defense team who helped Stevenson set-up the Equal Justice Initiative offices in Montgomery, Alabama.

Creed II

Creed II movie reviewPart Rocky III and part Rocky IV, Creed II offers the highs and lows of boxer Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) who wins the title but is then faced with a ghost from the past in the return of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) and the introduction of his son Viktor (Florian Munteanu).

Despite the film going full-on-Rocky at times, director Steven Caple Jr. works to stay true to the tone of Creed by focusing as much on what is going on outside the ring with Adonis Creed as what is happening inside the squared circle. Sylvester Stallone returns again as mentor, although one conflicted about the history tied up in a Creed v. Drago match. Tessa Thompson and Phylicia Rashad reprise their roles as Creed’s support system and family whose love will be tested when Creed accepts the challenge from Viktor Drago over their objections, and those of Rocky.

With Munteanu speaking very few lines of dialogue, the script relies on Lundgren to act as the film’s more vocal villain (while also exploring the reasons for Ivan needing this match for his prosperity and a future for his son).
