Star Trek: Discovery – Scavengers

I’m growing weary of “Michael breaks the rules” episodes. In “Scavengers,” Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green) ignores her orders and goes off in search of Book (David Ajala) who was captured while searching for another black box, on a salvage planet (sadly not named Junkion). The facility makes use of The Running Man prisoner-control technology, and may have another box with information about the Burn. Michael and Philippa (Michelle Yeoh) are able to retrieve Book and the intel, while also rescuing other enslaved workers. However, the conflict makes Michael aware of Philippa’s condition and also has lasting ramifications on her role on the ship as she finds herself demoted for ignoring Saru‘s (Doug Jones) orders and threatening the Federation’s acceptance of Discovery. The only subplots, as the mission Michael missed isn’t shown on-screen, are the ship’s upgrades and the show setting up a friendship between Nhan (Rachael Ancheril) and Stamets (Anthony Rapp).

“It was raining Starfleet officers.”

Star Trek: Discovery - Die Trying television review

“Die Trying” offers the crew of the USS Discovery the opportunity to prove their worth Fleet Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr), the current head of Starfleet, who is reluctant to trust a group of time travelers from the distant past. Despite the initial frosty reception, Discovery is given a mission with Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green) in command that shows off the usefulness of the ship’s Spore Drive and offer a strong argument for the ship’s crew to remain together rather than be dispersed across other ships of Starfleet. It seems the crew has found a new home, as something as a mascot for Starfleet, but it also offers foreshadowing concerning Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) playing well with others in their new surroundings.

Star Trek: Discovery – Far From Home

Star Trek: Discovery - Far From Home television review

“Far From Home” catches up with the rest of the crew of the USS Discovery who emerge from the wormhole to crash land on an unknown world. The damage to the ship allows for some convenient storytelling by making it impossible for the crew to determine their arrival in either space or time or attempt to contact their missing crewmember. While most of the crew works on repairs, unaware of the time sensitive nature of the parasitic ice the ship has crashed into, Saru (Doug Jones) and Tilly (Mary Wiseman) attempt to barter with the locales whose limited resources is balanced by the amazing advances in technology since Discovery’s time. The arrival of the murderous Zareh (Jake Weber) complicates matters. While Weber has fun with the role, Zareh is a rather bland villain of convivence who hints at the kinds of threats Discovery will face in their new time.

“All life is born from chaos and destruction.”

Star Trek: Discovery - The Vulcan Hello television review

Set a decade before the original Star Trek, the opening episode of Star Trek: Discovery introduces us to First Officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) of the Starship Shenzhou. After a short pre-credit sequence focused on the pair bringing water to a planet facing drought, ending in a fun (if goofy) fan-service moment, the episode moves towards the primary storyline involving the reawakening of hostilities between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. Coming across an unknown ship near a destroyed Federation interstellar relay will lead to high tensions aboard the Shenzhou, ending in near mutiny as the Vulcan-trained Burnham’s plan of attack flies in the face of the orders from both her Captain and the Federation.

Crazy Rich Asians

  • Title: Crazy Rich Asians
  • IMDb: link

Crazy Rich Asians Blu-ray reviewCrazy Rich Asians offers your basic going home to meet the parents tale, notable for two things. First, the romantic comedy features a talented all Asian cast. And second, it contains far better writing an acting than most romcoms. Our couple in love is Rachel (Constance Wu) and Nick (Henry Golding). Despite being nearly ready to propose, Nick hasn’t come clean with his girlfriend that his family is crazy rich (and also just plain crazy). Rachel discovers this for herself while accompanying Nick to Singapore for a friend’s wedding.

The film features what you’d expect. Nick tries to balance love and family obligations. Rachel struggles to fit in with his family and deal with his disapproving mother (Michelle Yeoh) before learning to stand-up for herself and teach the Youngs a few lessons of their own. The supporting cast includes the over-the-top Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, Jimmy O. Yang, and Nico Santos, and the more understated Gemma Chan who bonds with Rachel over her own marital troubles.
