Murder in a Small Town - A Touch of Panic

Marking the first episode of the series not to include a murder, “A Touch of Panic” does offer more obstacles for the burgeoning romance between Karl (Rossif Sutherland) and Cassandra (Kristin Kreuk), but not in the awkwardness between Cassandra and Karl’s daughter Holly (Dakota Guppy) but in a much more dangerous face from Karl’s past. Devon Sawa guest-stars as a dying man recently released from prison who blames Karl for everything wrong with his life leading him to target the sheriff’s loved ones. Subverting expectations, showing us someone following Holly and her friend (Alisha Newton) earlier in the episode, it turns out Cassandra was an easier mark leading to her kidnapping.

Murder in a Small Town - Prized Possessions

“Prized Possessions” provides an interesting twist as Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) investigates the disappearance, and apparent murder, of Cassandra’s (Kristin Kreuk) high-strung friend Emma (Erica Durance). Given that we seen Emma shoot a gun at her husband Charlie (Toby Levins) in the opening tease it’s not hard for us to jump to conclusions as to what occurred suggesting she’s killed her husband and waited to set up a perfect alibi for herself. Picking up on the friction in the marriage, Karl jumps to a similar conclusion. However, the truth turns out to be more complicated.

Murder in a Small Town - A Chill Rain

Notable for downplaying the romance into a subplot separate from the latest murder, “A Chill Rain” gives us Zoe Strachan (Stana Katic) whose brother is found murdered after arriving in town begging for money to pay of loan sharks. It’s not a bad episode, but there’s little surprise that Zoe is the killer (and just what is that accent from Katic?). Zoe is smart enough not to incriminate herself but acts incredibly recklessly in lying to the police and bullying her nephew when a little kindness, even faked, would likely have led her to getting away with murder. Her recklessness makes you wonder how she remained out of jail for so long.

Murder in a Small Town - Fall from Grace

“Fall from Grace” continues to progress the relationship of Chief of Police Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) and librarian Cassandra Lee (Kristin Kreuk) as the high school reunion brings an opportunity for the pair to take their first public outing as a couple and also leads to another murder. In the episode we see the highs and lows for Cassandra, quickly following for Karl, only to see his job interfere again at an inopportune time abandoning her at the dance. I would be surprised if this give-and-take doesn’t continually appear over the series for as long as the two are romantically linked.

Murder in a Small Town - The Suspect

Sometimes you get more than you expect, and that was the case for me in sitting down to watch the opening episode of Murder in a Small Town which comes off a bit more like a TV-movie than the first episode of a series. Into the sleepy coastal town of Gibsons, British Columbia, we get a couple of newcomers in Chief of Police Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) and the even more recently arrived Corporal Edwina Yen (Mya Lowe). The notable members of the police force are rounded out by the notably less-talented Sergeant Sid Sokolowski (Aaron Douglas). And, as the title of the show suggests, into the sleepy town comes murder.
