Knives Out movie reviewRian Johnson delivers a devilishly good time in this fantastically entertaining whodunit set around the apparent suicide of the patriarch (Christopher Plummer) of a wealthy family. Set almost entirely in the Thrombey home, the writer/director makes excellent use of both setting and a talented cast featuring Daniel Craig as private investigator Benoit Blanc who has reason to believe murder has been committed. Part Hercule Poirot and part Columbo, Craig is in good form as the smartest man in the room.

The suspects include every member of the dysfunctional Thrombey family (Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Chris Evans, Don Johnson, Katherine Langford, Michael Shannon, Jaeden Martell, and Riki Lindhome) each of whom has motive for murder. To help unravel the family’s dysfunction, Blanc enlists the help of the deceased’s nurse (Ana de Armas). The large supporting cast offers opportunities for several of its stars to steal scenes including Evans playing a role as far removed as possible from Steve Rogers and Johnson as a perfect rich douchebag completely oblivious to his own behavior.

Charlie's Angels - Angel Trap TV review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the tale of three beautiful former police officers turned private detectives working for a faceless boss known as Charlie. When a number of men who served together in WWII begin being assassinated, an old friend (John Larch) of Charlie’s enlists the help of Townsend Investigation to keep him alive. With the help of a woman (Phyllis Avery) who Charlie helped relocate after the war, the Angels are able to identify the assassin as a man named Jericho (Fernando Lamas). With Sabrina (Kate Jackson) posing as the client’s girlfriend and limiting the opportunities for the killer to strike to a single location of the Angels’ choosing, Jill (Farrah Fawcett) befriends the Frenchman in order to learn when he might strike.

Hawaii Five-0 - Ka 'i'o TV review

“Ka ‘i’o” is the obligatory send McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) off on an impossible mission episode. This time around it’s to Columbia and Mexico in search of Doris (Christine Lahti) who the CIA believes has been turned and is now working against American interest. The episode is a bit odd, with several gaps in the story, making me wonder if a two-part episode got truncated into something that would fit in the show’s normal hour-long framework. Other cast members make cameos here, but aside from Junior (Beulah Koale) who goes in with a team to assist Steve when he gets stuck, the rest of Five-0 is mostly here to stand around headquarters and await news. As is usually the case with these episodes, the action is quite good even if the plot struggles to remain credible. The episode marks the final appearance of Lahti’s character (except perhaps in flashbacks) as the show does surprise me in allowing Doris to be a traitor and meet her end. It’s a nice send off for a recurring character, and I’ll be curious to see if the show simply moves on from this or if Doris’ death lingers in the coming weeks.

Scooby-Doo! - The Headless Horseman of Halloween TV review

Today’s Throwback Tuesday takes us back to a Halloween-themed episode of The Scooby-Doo Show that pits Mystery, Inc. against the Headless Horesman. While attending a Halloween party as the guest of the great-great granddaughter of Ichabod Crane, Scooby-Doo (Don Messick) encounters a Headless Horseman on horseback who is after Gertrude Crane‘s “cursed” diamond necklace. Other than using Washington Irving‘s famous character, the episode is also notable (but not in a good way) for the appearance of Scooby’s cousin Scooby-Dum (Daws Butler) who fancies himself something of a detective (despite being dumber than a post). In the usual manner, the gang is able to put together enough clues to uncover the truth behind the haunting and the sudden reappearance of the legendary monster. While not one of the better mysteries, the Headless Horseman (both before and after he takes a head) provides a memorable villain for the episode.
