Elementary - Moving Targets television review

Elementary makes a surprising move with a storyline they’ve slowly been building this season. Given Shinwell‘s (Nelsan Ellis) recent attack on Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) I expected something to shift. With the skills Shinwell had picked by Sherlock, and how well he appeared to be putting them to use for his own ends, I half-expected the former gangbanger to decide to take over, rather than destroy, it from within. This would not only create a new adversary for Holmes and Watson (Lucy Liu) but also provide a constant source of grief for the pair in knowing they are responsible. Instead, Shinwell’s death shifts the focus of the season in an entirely different direction by turning the detectives’ attention to the gang which is likely responsible for the man’s murder.

Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #25

Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #25 comic reviewWhile ultimately I don’t think Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #25 quite lives up to its promise, it’s hard for me not to enjoy a comic that so blatantly celebrates the Bronze Age pairing of Green Lantern and Green Arrow. When Mystery, Inc. travels into Karma Corners the group of meddling kids and their talking dog run across a pair of hard-traveling heroes (making reference to Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams famous comic run).

I enjoyed seeing Scooby-Doo and the gang interact with both Ollie and Hal, but the setting of Karma Corners is a bit corny (even for me). Still, there’s plenty of fun to be had including writer Sholly Fisch having fun with the fact that Green Arrow’s rogues gallery is pretty damn forgettable. The comic even gives us a (far too short) appearance by Black Canary.

Lucifer - Candy Morningstar TV review

After an extended hiatus Lucifer finally returns. I’ll be honest, like Chloe (Lauren German) I was irked by Lucifer (Tom Ellis) apparently reverting to form showing up after an unannounced two-week vacation with a bimbette bride (Lindsey Gort) and walking into the police station as if nothing had happened. As the episode unfolded, however, there are aspects of the story that turned out to be better planned than simply resetting the status quo just for the sake of doing so. The hidden nobility of Lucifer’s actions and the truth about just who Candy (Gort) is both continue to build on a character who is far more layered than when Detective Decker first walked in to his bar. The subplot of his Mum (Tricia Helfer) wracking her head attempting to make sense out of such a bizarre action turned out to be an added treat.

Elementary - The Art Of Sleights And Deception TV review

Obsession can be deadly, and there’s plenty of obsession in “The Art of Sleights and Deception.” The death of a magician performing his trademark illusion sends Homes (Jonny Lee Miller) and Watson (Lucy Liu) down the rabbit hole which includes tricks of the trade, a sixty-year old mystery, and Nazi memorabilia. Despite plenty of dead ends, the pair eventually discover the true motive for the murder. The mystery proves to have quite a few twists and turns before the killer is raveled, plus there’s the added fun of seeing Watson’s reaction to Holmes’ unannounced performance of the magician’s trick in the middle of the brownstone.

Hawaii Five-0 – Waimaka ‘ele’ele

Hawaii Five-0 - Waimaka 'ele'ele television review

While the episode’s backstory allows the show to work in Adam‘s (Ian Anthony Dale) current job, and his discovery of a bone at construction gives him reason to suspect that human remains may have been buried there, the episode’s main focus involves a group of former soldiers turned bank robbers whose latest score causes the death of a Pearl Harbor veteran on the way home with his granddaughter (Lexi Atkins). Dylan Bruno becomes the latest Numb3rs alumni to make an appearance on the show as the leader of the robbers who have deeply personal reasons for their crimes and have no intention of being scared off by Five-0.
