Sherlock - The Lying Detective TV review

There are times Steven Moffat can be too clever for his own good. That said, he can also give us near perfect moments at the same time. A step-up from “The Six Thatchers,” but built entirely on the rift between Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) caused from the fallout of the previous episode, Sherlock delves into a part of the detective Elementary has spent far longer mining – his addictive personality. The episode has two main points. The first is to introduce a popular celebrity who enjoys murdering in his spare time. The second is to bring the detective and doctor back together again.

Sherlock - The Six Thatchers TV review

The Fourth Series of Sherlock kicks off with an episode that spends equal times dealing with the possibly return of Moriarty (Andrew Scott) from beyond the grave, setting up a larger story of the season, and focusing on Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) getting back to business by solving a multitude of cases while keeping an eye of for one that might offer more of a challenge and lead back to his nemesis. The case settled on involves the strange destruction of several busts of Margaret Thatcher, without an apparent reason. However, Holmes does find a reason buried deep within one of those busts and a motive he traces back to Mary Watson (Amanda Abbington) and her past.

Hawaii Five-0 - Ka 'aelike television review

“Ka ‘aelike” is a strange episode that wraps-up the show’s big mid-season cliffhanger before the opening credits even roll. Quickly sent back to Hawaii, with Chin (Daniel Dae Kim) now having custody of Sara (Londyn Silzer), the Five-0 crew gets back to business as usual for the case of the week. It’s odd for the show to throw away such a big lead-in, and I wonder if something larger wasn’t originally planned (involving the impregnable stronghold where the bad guys don’t even bother to take Chin), but was cut for either time or cost. Plus, the (completely unnecessary) involvement of Adam (Ian Anthony Dale) seems to be included for the sole purpose of helping Adam and Chin bury the hatchet (and possibly set-up trouble or the parole later this season).

Hawaii Five-0 - Ka'ili aku television review

After Sara (Londyn Silzer) is kidnapped, Five-0 heads down to Mexico to get the girl back (unaware that they are the ransom). Working to uncover the identity of the kidnappers by the charged corpse of one left behind, the team learns too late that those responsible for Sara’s abduction are with the Diego cartel looking for a little payback given Five-0 dispatching a few of their members earlier this season. The episode ends unexpectedly on a cliffhanger not with McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) leading the group on a suicidal mission on an impenetrable compound against overwhelming odds but Chin (Daniel Dae Kim) choosing to exchange himself for Sara’s safe return.

Elementary - It Serves You Right to Suffer TV review

The season’s ongoing B-story involving Watson‘s (Lucy Liu) relationship to Shinwell (Nelsan Ellis) comes to a head when he becomes involved in the shooting of a member from a rival gang. Believing his innocence, Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and Watson have only three days to find the person responsible for the crime, explain Shinwell’s involvement, and prevent the man from going back to prison. The investigation leads back to a FBI agent (Dorian Missick) who both Shinwell and the victim were working for as off-the-book informants.
