The Irrational – The Milgram Experiment

After a few episodes which struggled to make the experiment part of the larger story, “The Milgram Experiment” does just that (although more as an exercise to prove a point than solve a crime). The episode pairs  Alec (Jesse L. Martin) and Rose (Karen David) to investigate a deep fake video threatening to take down a local assistant district attorney (Ally McBeal‘s Gil Bellows) with political ambitions. The story has some nice twists involving Alec’s reaction to seeing Rose be differential to her boss (Adam Rayner) and in the discovery of the person (Jess McLeod) actually behind the video.

In the middle of a tropical storm, with the building locked down, Will (Ramón Rodríguez) and Angie (Erika Christensen) search for a serial killer on the lose while Dr. Chen (Kurt Yue) fights to save the life of the killer’s latest victim. While I feel there are some obvious scenes missing between the last episode and the beginning of this one with Will now completely onboard with Angie’s assertions that John (Dan Gill) isn’t the killer they are looking for, events pick up with the discovery of a new body hidden in the elevator shaft and the wounded Caroline (Christina Wren).

As Will (Ramón Rodríguez) and Faith (Iantha Richardson) investigate a body found under a house after a fire which seems to trace back to Rafael (Antwayn Hopper), Angie (Erika Christensen) and Ormewood (Jake McLaughlin) investigate the murder of a young woman where all the evidence points to Angie’s former coworker (Dan Gill) who proclaims his innocence for the crime (along with the original crime which he was sent to jail for years before). Despite her initial belief in his guilt, so much so she even takes a shot at him in the episode, Angie begins to suspect that his claim of being framed might not be as outrageous as it initially seems (although she has trouble getting anyone in the department to agree with her).

While dealing with the murder of a Vietnam vet, Franks‘ (Kyle Schmid) taking a homeless vet under his wing brings back painful memories of aimless time between his service and finding NIS. The episode works as a companion piece to “Flight of Icarus” in exploring Franks’ backstory. The flashbacks of the episode include his first encounter with Tish (Tonantzin Carmelo) which also ties into his current obsession of finding the man who assaulted her. The two pieces fit together nicely when his confession of what he’s been up to, despite previously promising he would drop the case, causes the abrupt end of their relationship.

“Detective” offers a big change for the show and a new path for Willis (Jimmy O. Yang) as the department begins looking into his brother’s disappearance in earnest. Willis, teamed with Turner (Sullivan Jones) shows off a knack for the job while Lana (Chloe Bennet) being paired with Green (Lisa Gilroy) provides the missing background of her relationship with Jonathan (Chris Pang) and events surrounding his disappearance. Together, Green and Lana discover the crashed boat which Jonathan had apparently been using to flee the area providing a potential end to the case (although the show is far from over).
