The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - The Solitary Cyclist

Sherlock Sunday takes us back to 221 B Baker Street and the Granada Television’s faithful adaptations of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. “The Solitary Cyclist” offers an example of  Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) being too slow to act nearly spelling disaster for his client Violet Smith (Barbara Wilshere) who hires the detective after noticing an odd man following her every week on her journey to and from the train station. The truth behind the mystery has to do with the sudden interest in the young woman from Mr. Carruthers (John Castle), whose daughter she is now tutoring, and the far less agreeable Mr. Woodley (Michael Siberry), following the death of her uncle overseas.

A letter from Percy Phelps (David Gwillim), an old schoolmate of Watson (David Burke), leads Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) to investigate the theft of secret naval treaty has been stolen from his office at the Foreign Office. The theft has left him in a state of ill-health for several weeks convalescing at home with his fiancée (Alison Skilbeck) and her brother (Gareth Thomas) at a loss as to what happened to the plans or how to salvage his reputation.

Premiering on June 16, 1947 as part of The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes radio program, Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) is hired by Edith Fairmont in a predicament involving the death of her husband with all evidence pointing to the man’s partner, who is also Edith’s lover, found in the locked room with the body. Aspects of the episode  involving the motive and method of murder would be reimagined 65 years later for an episode of Elementary – “You Do it Yourself.”

While investigating a double-homicide and looking for a missing pregnant woman who was the intended victim, Will (Ramón Rodríguez) continues to struggle with the emotions of Cricket’s (Susan Kelechi Watson) death. His investigation becomes momentarily focused on a preacher (Jerod Haynes) who he correctly guesses has something to hide, although it turns out not to have anything to deal with the current crime. Meanwhile, Angie (Erika Christensen) returns to work and dives into her own case of murder with Ormewood (Jake McLaughlin) involving the death of a selfish fitness nut was poisoned in a spa.
