The First Season finale is a turning point for NCIS: Origins but not for the main story involving a an ambitious MP (Claire Berger) attempting to prove Gibbs (Austin Stowell) killed Pedro Hernandez. We plenty of Gibbs, Franks (Kyle Schmid), Lala (Mariel Molino), and even Randy (Caleb Foote) strategizing how to keep Gibbs out of jail. Eventually Lala puts her own career on the line to keep Gibbs out of danger (and also lays a path for Mace‘s introduction int NIS). While also teasing a potential full-blown love affair between Gibbs and Lala, the episode teases us with a young girl and her dog which will change the fates of both characters in the season’s tragic closing scene.

The two episodes bring attention back the Sandman case which the team starts to take another look at once Jamison Boyd (Jared Bankens) tells Vera (Diany Rodriguez) he isn’t the sniper responsible for the murders and the real culprit shoots  him dead in the prison yard. “Bugs” spends quite a bit of time with Vera and her theories, which then bring in the rest of the team, while “Darlin’, Don’t Refrain” brings in the FBI to work alongside NIS to find the real Sandman who it turns out Gibbs (Austin Stowell) has already met.

The rape and murder of a sailor brings Tish‘s (Tonantzin Carmelo) case back in prominence as Franks (Kyle Schmid) wrongly assumes it’s the same man. Both cases eventually work themselves out with NIS solving the relatively simple case of the new killing, but in learning about Tish they decide to help Franks find the evidence needed to put the FBI’s latest suspect away. Gibbs (Austin Stowell), with his own history of vengeance and revenge, acts as a voice of reason for Franks talking him down from taking the law into his own hands. While the episode closes the loop on this story, it doesn’t mean a happy ending for Franks as Tish chooses to leave and find the peace which has illuded her.

“To Have and to Hold” focuses as much on the underappreciated Mary Jo (Tyla Abercrumbie) as the case of the week which involves the death of a woman recently released from prison for stealing millions of her clients money. The tie-in with NIS is the woman’s husband who believed the woman  had changed, although facts uncovered over the course of the investigation suggest otherwise. Notably, it’s another episode of the series where Gibbs (Austin Stowell) is pushed mainly to the sideline while other characters are highlighted.

A break-in of the evidence room and the theft of $41,000 dollars allows the show to explore the backstory of one of the show’s recurring characters in property master Kowalski (Michael Harney) as events bring old memories and feelings to the surface that cause him to resign (although he’s back with NIS by the end of the episode). The Kowalski situation is also notable for exploring his relationship with Granville (Daniel Bellomy) while the search for the missing money implicates a member of NIS and also allows for another appearance by Special Agent Gary Callahan and ends up being tied to events in “All’s Not Lost” as well.
