Once and Future

Once and Future #25

With Duncan, Bridgette, and Rose having joined Robin Hood and his Merry Men (which turns out to have some advantages to our heroes aside from fodder to throw at the various Arthurs battling over which of them will pull the sword from the stone), our heroes continue to fight the good fight while trying to stay alive. As fans have grown to expect there’s a mix of fun and craftiness in Once and Future #25 including how Bridgette gets our trio signed up with Robin Hood (and what she’s really after in joining his merry little band).

Once & Future #24

The runaway story continues to evolve as Arthur battles Arthur on the hills of Badon, which is saved by Zombie Arthur’s Merlin learning a trick or two from our heroes on how to turn a king against his favorite knight. And yet another Arthur appears to enter the fray. Any chance this one’s not as crazy and warmongering as the other two? Well, not if the pattern holds.

Meanwhile, after deciding freeing a crazed water god may not be the smartest idea, Bridgette, Duncan, and Rose look for a worthy warrior in the woods who has no love of kings. Enter Robin Hood, who just might be able to keep the various King Arthurs busy long enough for our heroes to come up with a plan.

Once and Future #23

Most of Once and Future #23 involves the armed standoff between Bridgette and her daughter hoping something in the secret armory of William Shakespeare can help her other son who is now being hunted by another Galahad. Eventually mother and daughter come to an understanding, Nimue decides not to shoot her mother and Duncan, Bridgette, and Rose leave her whatever they aren’t taking to help summon a water god as an ally in the increasingly out-of-control conflict. Despite the tension, no one dies and both sides go their separate ways.

The issue is a rarity in that, while still well done, is one you could skip without missing much of a beat. Other threads include Merlin stressing and yet another story being brought into the mix when a parlay with the fairies leads to three magic beans and a beanstalk.

Once and Future #22

Now the enemies of not one but two resurrected King Arthurs, our intrepid heroes Duncan, Bridgette, and Rose race to the secret armory of William Shakespeare (yeah, you read that right, THAT William Shakespeare) while being chased by Yvain and his giant fire-breathing lion (which turns out to be just as cool as it sounds, even if there’s no big payoff to his appearance) while the Grail Castle is attacked by a giant. Thankfully, Bridgette has plans to cover both situations. Unfortunately, neither are necessarily good plans

Once and Future #22 starts off with a bang while also catching up a little with Zombie King Arthur, whose plans aren’t going as well as he had hoped, and offering the return of Duncan’s mother (but what role is she now playing in the constantly evolving story?).

Once and Future #21

Once and Future #21 is overflowing with goodness. We get to meet Rose‘s parents, who our heroes set-out to rescue. There’s also a Gorgon turning everyone to stone and a knight of the new Arthur who Bridgette wants nothing to do with. Our intrepid heroes makeshift plans to deal with the Gorgon are terrific. First with tin foil, and later playing on the knight’s virtues to force the pair of obstacles into battling each other instead of them.

Along the way there’s also plenty of fun banter as Duncan finds himself quite outnumbered by those who know more about legends and myths. After rescuing Rose’s parents and seeing them to shelter, our heroes set out again alone to keep the others safe and hopefully not attract either Arthur’s attention. But in a world turned upside down by magic and myths brought to life, is any place truly safe?
