Powerpuff Girls

Super Secret Crisis War #1

Super Secret Crisis War #1IDW’s big Cartoon Network crossover begins here as villains Aku, Mojo Jojo, Vilgax, and Mandark band together with an evil plan to send robot warriors to capture their enemies Samurai Jack, Ben Tennyson, Dexter, and Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttecup.

The first issue allows the various villains and heroes to each have their moments to shine (although I would have liked more Mojo) while also setting up a scenario where the various heroes’ realms are all now unprotected. The villains also accidentally send robots to several other worlds leading to the capture of Ed, Edd, and Eddy (where the story begins to falter a bit) and setting up the various other one-shots over the next six months beginning with Johnny Bravo.

Powerpuff Girls #10

Powerpuff Girls #10Things get a bit groovy in the conclusion of the two-part arc as the Boogie Man transforms Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttecup along with the Rowdyruff Boys into 70s, free love, disco-lovin’ fools. Thankfully Buttercup’s natural hatred of disco allows her to break the spell and the two groups to agree to team-up to take down the Boogie Man. Oh course that’s where the giant robots come in. That’s right, giant robots!

Realizing he stands a chance at defeat, the Boogie Man calls on Klin-Ton to save the day. Stepping up to fight on the side of the Powerpuff Girls and Rowdyruff Boys, the teen pop band 3D (who are actually an alien glam rock band) together form the Ironium Viking for a battle of giant robots pitting the power of disco versus that of rock and roll.

Whether that made any sense to you at all, Powerpuff Girls #10 is the kind of insanity you don’t want to miss. It’s even got a cameo from Mojo Jojo who is foiled yet again. Worth a look.

Powerpuff Girls #9

Powerpuff Girls #9After surviving Monster Day, Townsville is in for an entirely different kind of threat which begins when Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttecup‘s favorite boy band The Three Dees comes to town. The Powerpuff Girls’ ecstasy and seeing the threesome in concert, and even meeting them, is short-lived however with the arrival of the Rowdyruff Boys who take over the stage to perform their own kind of music that whips the crowd into a crazed frenzy.

Their hands already full with Brick, Boomer, and Butch, the situation becomes exponentionally more complicated with the arrival of the Boogie Man who has his own thoughts about what the citizens of Townsville should be listening to and is willing to instigate an “all-out disco alien invasion sensation” to prove his point.

The boy band idea allows for some cute moments from the threesome, a cameo from Dee Dee, and even showcases Professor Utonium fan boy nature. It also lets writer/artist Troy Little to bring back an under-utilized villain in the Boogey Man while working the unique threat of the Rowdyruff Boys into the comic for the first time. Worth a look.

Powerpuff Girls #8

Powerpuff Girls #8The second-half of the “Monster Day” begins with the Powerpuff Girls defeated and dejected in their room and Steve‘s monster swarm destroying the city of Townsville and preparing for the night’s final festivities: eating the Mayor! Getting the kick in the butt they need from Professor Utonium, Bubbles comes up with a plan to even the odds by taking control of the remaining Mojobots and leading them into battle against the monster horde.

Although the Girls suffered momentary defeat at the end of last issue, Powerpuff Girls #8 allows the threesome to return with a force thanks to a little fatherly push and a brainstorm by my favorite member of the group. Once again the day is saved by the Powerpuff Girls, but despite the monsters eventual defeat Steve’s reign continues as his subjects admit that this has been the best day ever (meaning, if the comic stays around long enough, we may get another Monster Day somewhere down the line). The lastest issue delivers on action, wackiness, and a nice message about never giving up no matter the odds. Worth a look.

Powerpuff Girls #7

Powerpuff Girls #7The momentary peace in Townsville after Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles defeated HIM and Mojo Jojo that allowed the girls a chance to do their own experiments in Professor Utonium‘s laboratory is disrupted by the first annual Monster Day as creatures from Monster Island who the heroines have beaten in the past all converge on the city on the same day to wreak havoc (and regain their lost confidence).

Written and drawn by Derek Charm (whose take on the characters is quite good), the cliffhanger ending of the first issue of the two-issue arc offers something we don’t see very often: a trio of bruised and beaten Powerpuff Girls giving up when they realize the monsters’ invasion will only last a single day and they can clean-up the city tomorrow.

Even with their defeat and the overwhelming odds stacked against them I’d be surprised if we don’t see the Powerpuff Girls leap back into action next issue rather than let the monsters’ rampage continue. Worth a look.
