I’m not sure how much more TV can milk out of the goofy, off-beat, somewhat damaged police consultant that Tony Shalhoub brought back in vogue with Monk. Over the past decade we’ve seen psychics (Psych, The Mentalist), mathematics professors (Numb3rs), a writer (Castle), a thief (White Collar), a biophysicist (The Eleventh Hour), and the return of Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock) just to name a few. The latest hour-long drama to cash in on the formula stars Rachael Leigh Cook as a FBI agent who taps a brilliant but schizophrenic professor of neuroscience (Eric McCormack) who often hallucinates people and events to help him work through complex puzzles into help solve her cases.

My First Wedding

my-first-weddingMy First Wedding is a study in contradictions.  It’s a story of a shameless guy who pretends to be a priest to get a girl into bed, and it’s a sweet love story.  It has a manic comedic energy but delivers some quiet truths about fears, relationships, and love.  It’s a look at how we want the people we love to be honest with us, though not all lies are bad, and how all of us just want someone who loves us so completely they would be willing to do anything, no matter how outrageous, to win out hearts.

Vanessa (Rachael Leigh Cook) is about to be married to an extremely nice and wealthy man, (Paul Hopkins), but she has a problem.  Unable to deal with the lustful thoughts of other men she ducks into a confessional and confesses to whom she thinks is a priest.  The problem is the man she confesses to, Nick (Kenny Doughty), is only a carpenter.  Let the farce commence.

Psych – The Complete Third Season

I’m a big fan of Psych. Equal parts silliness and mayhem (with more than its fair share of 80’s pop culture references), the tale of fake psychic Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his best pal Burton Guster (Dule Hill) solving crimes, both large and small, is a darn good time.

The four-disc set includes all 16 episodes from Season Three. One of my favorites from this season, or, for that matter the entire series, is the high school reunion episode “Murder? … Anyone? … Anyone? … Bueller?” packed to the brim with John Hughes references. It, like the season’s final episode “An Evening with Mr. Yang” (another strong episode, which you can watch below), also guest-stars Rachael Leigh Cook as the girl from Shawn’s past who got away.
